Route: Combo: Ervin and Blaurock From West Winfield
Posted On: 6/30/2024, By: pbergmaier
Info: Route is completely dry up to the connecting ridge between Ervin and Blaurock. There are two snow crossings (~40 ft long and another ~20 ft long) along the final 1/2 mile ridge scramble to the summit. Both are located at the top of couloirs. We didn't use any traction (and didn't really need any due to the soft snow), but having an ice axe on hand wouldn't have been the worst idea just in case of a slip.

Info: Clear road up to Winfield. Minimal snow until around 11k. Snow was supportive, brought snowshoes, and didn't use them. The crux of the ridge between Ervin and Blaurock was pretty spooky with cornices and snow so I bypassed it to the north.

Route: Combo: Ervin and Blaurock From West Winfield

Info: We were able to drive to the point described in the route without issue (taco and subie) but there was some snow and ice on the road. Once we got onto the ridge to Ervin, slick unconsolidated snow made it slow going and a bit sketchy on the class 3 bits. Traction and axe helped in some spots. It was honestly difficult to know where the true route was causing us to descend and cross a steep snowfield to get to the described notch. Would have been better to stay high prior to the notch even with the snow. The ridge back to Blaurock was quite long with ups and downs but snow thankfully didnt complicate this too much. Ended up descending into the basin then connecting to the correct rib on our descent to avoid regain. This day was a lot more than expected overall!

Info: No snow needs to be crossed. There are a couple snow patches in two of the saddles on the along the ridge to the summit, but all can be passed by.

Info: Dry but relentlessly steep all the way up Ervin's south ridge. The summit ridge scramble has some mandatory snow crossings that I was very happy to have microspikes for. Continued on to Blaurock, which has avoidable snow except for the large obvious snowfield near the summit in the attached photo. Used spikes to cross this. Descended Blaurock's south ridge which was also dry, just annoyingly loose and steep.

Route: Grey Copper Creek

Info: Combined with Blaurock from Grey Copper Creek. There are clearings one can follow up Blaurock's lower ridge that keep bushwhacking to a minimum. Blaurock was more tedious than I expected, lots of loose rockhopping and up and down to get to its summit. Ervin was a lot harder than trip reports had me believe, it was a solid class 3 ridge scramble on the summit ridge. The piece of advice I wish I had been given: stay ridge proper, the whole way. I didn't think an axe was necessary, but I would have been very unhappy without microspikes: there are a few snow crossing (one over a pretty big cornice) that require caution. The bushwhack back down was pretty lame, but game trails presented themselves.

Route: From Winfeild

Info: Summit ridge scramble had quite a bit of snow which made it somewhat spicy. Without my ice axe I would have turned back. Wish I'd brought a helmet. The glissade down the south facing couloirs was fabulous. The snow isnt continuous but you can hop between snowfeilds. Definitely not summer conditions quite yet.

Route: S Ridge / West ridge via 390
Posted On: 7/25/2021, By: LetsGoMets
Info: Summer conditions. Very wet bushwack and scrambling due to overnight rains. Departed 390 shortly after CDT crossing and bushwacked through mostly open trees at the start, to some thicker stuff for a bit before breaking onto open talus. Class 2/2+ to the main ridge and then 2+/legit 3 to the summit. Register in canister was soaked and needs to be replaced. Continued on to Blaurock.

Route: Ervin/Blaurock from Winfield

Info: Summer conditions. Snow easily avoidable. There are still a lot of fallen trees from the 2018/2019 avalanche debris, but you can probably avoid them during the bushwhack from the road if you choose your route carefully (instead of going straight through them at times like I did).

Route: Southwest Ridge
Posted On: 5/24/2020, By: HikerGuy
Info: Road up from Winfield is in good shape, easy for SUV. Summer conditions to summit ridge. All snow avoidable on summit ridge except for two patches immediately before the summit. The crossings are short and flat. Low risk, but high consequence. Probably best to have an ice axe, but some sharp-pointed rocks in each hand sufficed only because the snow was soft enough. If snow was icy or too firm, I would not have crossed.. Traction not needed.

Route: Southwest Ridge

Info: Super fun scramble! The route from the road/campsites west of Winfield to treeline is a bit undefined so GPS may be helpful, but generally you'll just want to go up the fall line until you're on the southwest ridge. The basins between the ridges are not going to get you access to the peaks. The ridge itself is mostly easy until the summit ridge, going at Class 2 to perhaps Class 2+ depending on line taken. The summit ridge is where things get fun; a number of gendarmes block easy travel and you'll have to climb over several, including some with knife edges and one with either a Class 4 headwall (not terribly exposed) or a Class 3 notch. There may be some down climbing involved depending on how one takes these towers. I'd say most of them could be bypassed, probably to the south, but it would be on horrendously loose choss and probably wouldn't be easier or safer than the ridge proper, and definitely wouldn't be as fun. Most of the rock on the ridge is loose in some way, so test everything carefully. Descend the way you came up or over to Blaurock.
