Route: Combo: Ervin and Blaurock From West Winfield
Posted On: 9/13/2024, By: jpacheco1982
Info: Did Ervin and Blaurock today. Some good exposure on Ervin ridge. Lots of loose rock on Ervin and blaurock and blaurock southeast ridge on descent. Small dusting of snow above 13400 but nothing significant. Loose rock was biggest hazard. Some route finding challenges in Ervin ridge

Info: Clear road up to Winfield. Minimal snow until around 11k. Snow was supportive, brought snowshoes, and didn't use them. The crux of the ridge between Ervin and Blaurock was pretty spooky with cornices and snow so I bypassed it to the north.

Info: Climbed Blaurock today and turned back right before the summit on Ervin due to time constraints, unconsolidated and slippery snow covering loose rock, and uncertainty of the correct (and safest route). Always a hard decision for me, but proud of myself for sticking to my guns today when I just was not feeling that it was entirely safe and could not come to a quick decision on which route was best. Blaurock felt much longer from the saddle than Ervin, with an insane amount of false summits and had some spicy sections along the ridge because it was pretty loaded in snow. I broke trail from the saddle up to Blaurock, and it was pretty deep in some spots (up to my belly button). Great day out there today and a good season opener to get my winter scrambling legs ready for future climbs!

Info: Trail totally dry all the way but there is some snow starting to linger on the shaded north slopes. Some really good fall colors too: some spots in full color, some still green, others already dropped their leaves. Lots of patches had brown mixed with gold.

Info: Snow is completely avoidable EXCEPT for some patches on the ridge to Ervin. We did Ervin first and the snow was still hard so we could just walk on top of it. Spikes were nice because in some places a fall would have taken you hundreds of feet down steep snow. Mostly you can stay on the crown of the snow

Info: Contrary to previous CRs, the approach is dry but the peaks are not. I took the standard route up Ervin but made my own descent route down Blaurock. Fresh snow/loose rock made it slow going on scrambling bits. Cornices look ready to fall.

Info: Reports of full winter conditions in the Sawatch have been greatly exaggerated. Didn't see snow on the (admittedly south-facing) route until 13k, and didn't step in snow until the summit ridge to Ervin at 13.4k. Sunny and beautiful all morning. Bushwhack was easy, as the trees are quite spaced out. Snow did not affect the scramble much, if at all. Over to Blaurock had an inch or two between the rocks. Loose talus abounds, especially if you dodge Blau's false summits on the way back. Solid, quick loop for a Tuesday morning

Info: Summer. Only did Blaurock (had to catch a flight later). Found this route to definitely be loose in some spots but not nearly as bad as expected. Took the ridge up and down, east side coming down and west side of it going up. East side was wayyyy better and more navigable.

Info: Traverse from Ervin, summer conditions. Class 2/2+ on the final push. Canister needs new register, but dry. Descent back out to road a sloppy wet bushwack for a bit to link back up to the starting point. My 100th unique 13er.

Info: Both Mount Blaurock and Ervin are totally dry. No need for traction. Saw a few hunters around the area, so wearing bright colors isn't a bad idea. Fall colors are probably at peak as of 09/26/2020.

Info: Summer conditions. Snow easily avoidable. There are still a lot of fallen trees from the 2018/2019 avalanche debris, but you can probably avoid them during the bushwhack from the road if you choose your route carefully (instead of going straight through them at times like I did).
