"Huerfano Peak"

Peak Condition Updates
5/16/2020
Route: North Slopes
Posted On: 5/17/2020, By: brauda02
Info: Hiked up the Huerfano Trail and contoured around the east side of Huerfana. This is a different variation than the route described by Roach. The only snow we encountered was a few hundred yards before treeline. There were a couple of exposed moves right before the summit.

Route: West Ridge via Iron Nipple
Posted On: 5/11/2020, By: Randy1983
Info: After a few months of failed attempts, finally got this one. No flotation/traction needed. But micro spikes might be helpful to some. Thank goodness LLTH was open, nice to finally save the extra miles. Forest still has some late day post-holing, but not too bad, typical spring business. Upper route is dry. Looks like Lindsey might still be skiable? Not sure if it would be worth it to haul skis back there for that run though. So glad to see so many others in the area. Met this epic mountain pup named Maverick and had a hummingbird fly within a foot of my face. With how fast it is melting, won't be long 'til the full route is dry.

Route: West Ridge
Posted On: 4/13/2020, By: Randy1983
Info: Hiked in to the Huerfano Valley on the 11th. Snow was stable and I cruised through the forest and up to 12,100. Kept snow shoes on from the Lower TH all the way to where I camped. Spent the night in brutal wind and snow. Was testing a new tent so wanted harsh conditions. Woke up to clear skies and made my way up to the saddle between Iron Nipple and Lindsey. After skirting the Nipple and gaining the ridge, I saw a massive change in weather. Strong wind and snow made me turn back about 400' below the summit. Really wish I had had my skis for the way out. Though once back on the valley floor, the snow was absolute trash. Trekking back to the car was some of the worst post-holing EVER.

Info: Snow varies from 6 inches to 2 feet from trailhead to saddle. From saddle to summit, route is wind scoured and dry. Didn't use traction or flotation. See trailhead status for road conditions. I had to park ~5 miles below upper th making this 18.6 miles round trip.

Route: Via Lindsey
Posted On: 7/22/2018, By: dwoodward13
Info: Summer conditions. From Lindsey saddle, took obvious weakness in first cliff band then contoured to a roughly even elevation weakness in second cliff band, then ridge to summit. Rock between second cliff band and ridge is somewhat loose. Easy to add on "Iron Nipple" either going or coming (we hit it on the way back).

Info: Summer conditions! Also- steam crossing is really low, and there is now a pine tree trunk running across it. Super easy to cross and stay dry.

Route: South Slopes
Posted On: 10/22/2017, By: Grover
Info: Summitted "Huerfano Peak" w/ CardGenius on Saturday afternoon. This route is in great shape, with very minimal snow to deal with, and none above treeline. The only spot where there is some snow is in the trees, while hiking up the gorge, along the (partly frozen) stream. Brought spikes, but never used them. No snow to deal with from the saddle, past Iron Nipple and up to the summit. Highly recommend this route if you are still looking to get out on a summit.

Info: Entire route is snow free. Skirted across Iron Nipple on the way up, scrambled up Iron Nipple on the way back. Great peak! Absolutely no crowds on the summit.
