Peak Condition Updates

Route: Huerfano - South Slopes (with Iron Nipple option)
Posted On: 10/18/2021, By: Geckser
Info: The trail is getting sloppy and the road is getting icy. On some steep sections of the road it will be icy in the mornings or after dark. Be prepared. Wanna give a big shoutout to whoever did Huerfano before us, made the while trip much more bearable. It is snowy until 12,500 feet at which point you can essentially rock hop to the summit. The tracks were pretty icy, but there is a good track in place all the way to the pass with Lindsey. Good day, hopefully doesn't get covered with too much more snow

Route: Huerfano - South Slopes (with Iron Nipple option)
Posted On: 7/2/2021, By: Terminally_Chill
Info: Slowly made our way up and out of the clouds on a wet weds. The road to the upper TH is completely snow free and the trail was also mostly snow free but the recent moisture down there has much of the streams spilling over their banks onto the trail. My partners went on and scrambled up the Lindsey ridge and from what I could see there didn't seem to be any snow left on Lindsey's ridge either.

Info: Snow is gone. The route up Iron Nipple and Huerfano is dry.

Route: South Slopes
Posted On: 6/16/2021, By: cdgibbons
Info: Essentially summer conditions above 12,300; a few snowfields on the SE slopes are easily avoided. As the Lindsey reports have mentioned, the section from the stream crossing to about 12,300 has plenty of downed timber, drifts, mix of boot pack and postholing, etc. Agree with others that gaiters, poles, and extra socks are the recommended gear.

Info: Gecksers skin tracks covered in new snow but made fat biking efficient on the downhill. Not sure this CR matters now since the March madness blizzard but got in one last snowflake before seasons end and the surrounding peaks sure were pretty. The wind was ferocious. Didn't stay long. Just a tag, you're it kind of day. Bummer. Went up to the saddle out n back. Good snow. Spring is near.

Route: South Slopes

Info: Not a flake of snow to be seen. We know for a fact since we crawled across the tundra, saddles, ridges, talus, etc. with our eyes 2 inches from the ground to avoid being blown away. Fun day. Why do we do this again?

Info: Ascended after Iron Nipple summit. Snow was not an issue anywhere along the route. First pic shows Iron Nipple (l) and Huerfano (r). 2nd pic is from Iron Nipple summit with Huerfano showing tallest background right.

Route: North Ridge Traverse from UN 13555
Posted On: 9/6/2020, By: MC.Ikema
Info: UN 13555 > Huerfano Peak: Reiterating that the first 1/3 of the climb from UN 13555 to Point 13470 seemed Class 2+/Easy Class 3. Point 13470 is the brown band of rocks running through the ridge (image #2). From point 13470 to Huerfano the ridge was Class 3 (possibly Class 4 if you don't take the easiest line). There is a “Stretch of Faith” about halfway through that didn't seem to have a down climb bypass (image #1 & #3). Just whip out your Gumby legs and split ‘em down the middle to cross this crack in the ridge (easier for us 6 foot folks). The entire traverse took me about 1h 45m. Comments on the UN 13555 registry reported 2 hours to make the traverse from Huerfano Peak.

Route: Lily/Forgotten
Posted On: 8/12/2020, By: Unknown
Info: Ascended Lily lake, gained the Lindsey saddle, and crossed the brief knife edge at iron nipple. Tagged Huerfano and then decided to make a loop out of it. Descended “Forgotten Basin” and followed Dutch Creek to the trail split. Little bit of bushwhack and route finding involved but not terrible. Gained the Huerfano trail split, took switchbacks back to the road, and hiked a mile back up the road. 11.5mi 4,400'

Route: Ridge from 13,555, ridge to Iron Nipple
Posted On: 7/7/2020, By: supranihilest
Info: The ridge from 13,555 to "Huerfano" is quite long, contains a ton of scrambling, mostly Class 2+ but up to Class 3 (and possibly Class 4 if you don't find the easiest line), and is very loose and exposed in spots. It would be too difficult to describe the full ridge but a basic pattern is each notch is Class 3 and the expanses in between are Class 2+. The last 1/3 or so of the ridge is actually pretty solid, mostly Class 2+. Do not underestimate the length and route finding difficulties of this ridge. It took me just a hair over 90 minutes. From "Huerfano" I went over to Iron Nipple instead of taking the south slopes; this consisted of some easy scrambling off the summit and then an easy Class 2 stroll over to Iron Nipple. See my Iron Nipple CR for details of the ascent.

Info: Summer conditions the entire way. The creek crossing at mile 1 is doable without getting wet thanks to some well-placed logs and some balance.

Route: Lindsey-Iron Nipple-Huerfano
Posted On: 6/8/2020, By: Corey17
Info: Climbed Mt. Lindsey, Iron Nipple, and "Huerfano Peak" on 6/7. Overall, excellent summer conditions. The first mile has a couple spots where the trail is underwater as usual this time of year. We brought sandals to cross the creek, maybe up to a foot deep. There were a few snow drifts left, but none were big nor problematic and we could walk around all of them. From the upper basin to all 3 summits, it's completely dry.

Route: South Ridge
Posted On: 6/3/2020, By: LetsGoMets
Info: Normal trail up to Lindsey saddle is mostly summer once you get up to the basin, but there is enough blow down and snow patches in the lower areas to want to be familiar with the route if you are heading up in the dark. Water crossing about 1 mile in is a wade across currently.

Route: South Ridge

Info: Dry, summer conditions. The creek crossing near the trailhead is shin/knee high, there's a log about 100' upstream of the trail that you can butt scoot across, but you'll still get your feet wet.
