Peak Condition Updates

Route: West ridge via Willow Creek

Info: Clear all the way from TH to summit. Really dry conditions and grassy slopes are more easily negotiated.

Route: South Ridge
Posted On: 9/19/2016, By: tdawg012
Info: South Ridge clear of snow. There is spotty ~1" hail/graupel/snow mix in shadowy areas on northeastern faces of peaks in the vicinity but not a concern per se.

Route: Northwest Ridge
Posted On: 9/19/2016, By: Grover
Info: Reached the summit of Mt. Adams via the Northwest Ridge / South Crestone Lake Trail on Sunday. News and info to share: > I highly suggest camping in front of the big waterfall at ~11,000 ft, roughly 3.15 miles from the start of the South Crestone TH. > The route around South Crestone Lake is not bad, but some spots are wet/go through a marsh. > Route after South Crestone Lake up and into the basin under Mt. Adams is straightforward, but there is not a solid path. > The Northwest Ridge is steep but the talus is mostly solid. Pick the path of least resistance. > Summit block is short and sweet, but does require some route finding to make it safe. If you are thinking of doing the 'Tour de Adams' and coming down the West Ridge back to South Crestone Lake, there is snow in the wide, steep talus filled couloir. I would recommend returning via the Northwest Ridge, as there is no snow on this route, as of this posting on 9/19.

Info: Entire route completely dry. Bring DEET - lots of thirsty mosquitoes! Long sleeves in thicker material, such as wool or fleece, and long pants helpful.

Route: Horn Lakes
Posted On: 10/31/2015, By: My-Therapy
Info: Mt. Adams via Horn Lakes route: Trail head to 1 1/2 miles up trail = No snow, dry with some mud. From 1 1/2 miles to 3 miles = Intermittent snow, mud, slush. From creek crossing (approx. mile 3) until mile 4 = 4" -6" of snow. From mile 4 until mile 5 = 8" - 12" of snow. From mile 5 to where I stopped (just before upper Horn lake) Foot+ of snow including occasionally post-holing to my knees. I did not have snowshoes but wish I did from mile 4 on. I was the only one on the trail today and made it to 12,100‘. Nice boot pack trench in. Snow was melting all along the trail but especially fast between mile 2 to mile 4.

Route: West ridge via Willow Creek

Info: After doing KC/Challenger, I made a risky decision to charge up Adams at 1:30pm. The weather was great at the time, but I told myself the first sound of thunder no matter how far away I would turn around. Made it back to camp at Willow Lake before 3:30pm just before it got cloudy. I‘d say perfect timing! No snow on route, willow bashing is minimal, mosquitos are not. The damn mosquitos were even swarming me on the summit!

Route: West ridge via Willow Creek

Info: Climbed Pt 13546, Mt Adams A, and Pt 13580A from Willow lake. The entire route was dry and wonderful. Serious mosquito clouds from the N Crestone trailhead all the way to the lake. DEET it up.

Route: East Ridge via Horn Creek
Posted On: 1/30/2012, By: geojed
Info: Re-broke snow covered trench for first 3mi or so. From there broke new trail/trench up to 2nd creek crossing. East Ridge to PT13,325 has low avy danger if you stay on rocks/grass as much as possible. Small avy snow patch just below PT13,325. Adams E Ridge proper is in great condition. Couloir up to summit block looks very sketchy WRT avy danger right now. Recommend class 5 crack on NW corner to gain summit block.

Info: Very little snow on route and it was easily avoided. Left trailhead @ 5:45, arrived at Willow Lake @ 8:20. Kicked back for a few, had some snacks and left for summit. Reached summit @ 11:25, weather was spectacular. Hung out and relaxed on summit enjoying the awesome views. Followed the route as described by jdorje. Route description and photos are excellent. Thanks! Ground out the hike down Willow Creek trail and arrived back at the trailhead @ 2:30.
