9/9/2023 Route: From Wildhorse and Blackwall Posted On: 9/11/2023, By: IHikeLikeAGirl Info: Horsethief Trail between Wildhorse and Cow is pretty nice. On the day we went, there were several places where we could have filtered water, if needed. Focusing more on the 2nd half of our trip, these spots would have worked (38.00528, -107.58214 - labeled "stream" on my map) and where the trail crosses Wildhorse Creek. On a drier year...I suppose you wouldn't want to count on water there. The ridge from Cow back towards 13132 is...bumpy...far more bumps than I expected and I lost count. Some are easily bypassed, others not so much. The biggest obstacle we bypassed on the SW side; on loose talus, scree, and medium, boulders. I don't know if the other side would have been better. Overall, the ridge was more time consuming than I expected, but was still a great day! |

7/5/2023 Route: Engineer Pass Posted On: 7/7/2023, By: JasonKline Info: We did the Engineer Mountain->Darley Mountain->13132->Cow Benchmark->Wildhorse Peak->Blackwall Mountain loop from Engineer Pass as described in https://www.14ers.com/php14ers/tripreport.php?trip=17855 although we took a slightly different route back to Engineer Pass from Blackwall Mountain. There was still patchy snow throughout the route that we occasionally traversed. Most of the snow was flat and inconsequential, and much of it could have been avoided. There was an unavoidable patch on the way up 13132 that had some slope to it, but it was relatively wide and had a flat path on top so you were never close to the edge. One of us did not use microspikes, and the two of us who did use microspikes didn't find them terribly useful on most of the snow due to its softness. None of us took ice axes, but axes might have been nice on the patch below 13132. |
