Peak Condition Updates

Route: W Slopes/SW ridge
Posted On: 9/26/2023, By: Codyhill1991
Info: Fantastic summit. Whole route is dry, unsurprisingly. There is a lot of blowdown in the trees, but I actually found it pretty easy to navigate on the way up, it felt much less tedious than I'd anticipated. It's intuitive and there are trail snippets throughout. Steep and kind of hellish above treeline but nice and fast-going once you hit the ridge. I would call this whole route class 2+ honestly. I got myself into a mess on the way down - be careful about where you enter the trees once you descend past the little clearing. Horrific and steeeeep blowdown lurks everywhere, I used JQDivides GPX to get myself back on track on the way down, worked great. Fall colors all around the Owl Creek Pass area right now are stunning. Summit register needs more paper and probably a new pen.

Route: SW Ridge

Info: A ton of blow-down in the forest below the saddle, which makes for slow going. Summer conditions until the saddle between the false and true summit where there is some remaining snow. Didn't like my chances on the off camber crossing and will have to return for the true summit once melted out.

Route: Western slopes

Info: Nice peak for a short weather window. Parked about a mile from upper TH as the road started to get rough. Took a gully on West side, then south ridge to the summit. Lots of dead fall in the trees.

Route: South Ridge from West Fork Cimarron
Posted On: 9/27/2021, By: supranihilest
Info: From the parking lot for the Wetterhorn Basin trailhead go directly east up an obvious flood path. Before it gets too narrow and steep, head left into the forest or else you won't be able to get out of the drainage higher up. The forest is full of deadfall and pretty bushwhacky. Once above treeline head towards the south ridge, which will come off the summit to looker's right. You'll pass under some cliffs and across a few vague ribs with an obvious grass slope being the target. I didn't head to the saddle, instead hiking up the grass slope to the left towards the summit. Mostly grass and chalky rock. A quick Class 2+ scramble through an obvious gap with a rock perched in the middle brings you to the upper mountain which is more grass and poor, chalky rock with tons of boulders bizarrely embedded in it. Hike up through this weird rock garden and to the false summit, then to the true summit. There might be a move of Class 2+ thrown in but it's mostly Class 2.

Route: West Slope

Info: Straightforward climb up the main gully system with fun and decently solid crossover climbing. The descent off the Fortress-Precipice ridge is sleet and loose but not unmanageable.

Route: Saddle Route

Info: Windy! Aside from that, perfect summer conditions, hitting the end of wildflower season. I imagine the Aspens near Silverjack will begin turning soon.

Route: Drainage to saddle

Info: Summer conditions with wildflowers all the way up. Afternoon rain and hail - had to turn back at ridge. Start early and you should be fine
