8/3/2023 Route: from Hanson Posted On: 8/3/2023, By: 9patrickmurphy Info: Did a loop of 13,075->Hanson->Hurricane->Tuttle->Houghton from Animas Forks. Road up Placer Gulch to grassy slopes up 13,075. For Hanson, I didn't take the road that leads to its south ridge, rather I gained grassy slopes to its east and took these to the summit. A bit steep, but pleasant. Some workers down at the Sunnyside Mine were blasting music which was quite annoying (I thought I'd ony have to deal with ATV noise...) On the way to Hurricane, there's a ridge bump that contains a class 3 ridge to a class 2+ gully. This bump doesn't look like it can be easily skirted and the rock was fine, so just stick ridge proper. It's not obvious if coming from Hanson. Took Hurricane's northwest ridge down to Hurricane Pass, then walked the road towards California Pass. At a low point, a trail takes off northward on an ascending traverse towards Tuttle. Easy terrain to Houghton. Somewhat annoying terrain descending Houghton's southeast ridge back to AnimasForks, but it went quick enough. Houghton was my 250th ranked 13er! |

8/3/2021 Route: From Tuttle Peak via Hurricane Pass Posted On: 8/3/2021, By: supranihilest Info: From Tuttle's summit I descended the south ridge and joined a trail marked on Forest Service maps below spot elevation 12,953. The trail is faint and overgrown but saved me some time and elevation from dropping to the road on the east side of the ridge, as it instead stays high, crosses to the west side of the ridge, and joins the road higher up near the tri-junction at Lake Como in Poughkeepsie Gulch. I took the road to Hurricane Pass then took Hurricane's northeast ridge, which is mostly scree and talus, to the summit. It's steep in spots and footing is loose but it's Class 2 and has various trail segments throughout. |
