Peak Condition Updates

Route: SE Ridge
Posted On: 7/7/2023, By: sdkeil
Info: Drove up Placer gulch and parked around 11,800 at a small pullout. The road is plowed all the way to the summit of California Pass. I hiked Hanson via it's saddle from California Mountain and then descended the standard route SE ridge route over to UN13075. Encountered some small snowfields on the way up that needed to be navigated carefully (never put on crampons or microspikes). No snow on the SE ridge route.

Route: Cr9 north face

Info: Importantly, the road is plowed at least as high as 12,200 ft and probably further, but that's where I stopped walking. I skinned up from here up the gully on the west side of the north face to bypass the cliffs, then skinned basically up the east side of the north face. Visibility was all time low so I couldn't see much but snow conditions were all time for June, it dumped the whole time I was up this morning, maybe 5-6 total inches of cold pow up high, and a stickier 3-4 inches below 12,500 ft. I couldn't see anything the whole time I was skiing but it felt good to ski light fluffy soft snow, when I could tell what direction was up. New snow is not bonded to old snow so some small loose stuff slides were happening anytime slope angle was over 35 degrees, definitely watch for loose wet activity once the sun comes back if that ever happens...

Route: From Bonita Peak/Emery Peak Saddle
Posted On: 8/3/2021, By: supranihilest
Info: The descent towards Lake Emma from the Bonita/Emery saddle is steep and super loose. It's not hard, just tedious. I passed through a bunch of old mining ruins and attempted to find what was either an old trail or road that cuts northwest across the slopes below Hanson before curving northeast to the saddle east of Hanson. This was by far the worst part of the entire day. The slopes are steep, the trail is very overgrown and hard to follow, covered in down sloping rock, and just plain non-existent in many cases. I was able to sort of follow it as it made this curve, and then went across the bottom of the mine debris from the Sunnyside Mine, and then I went straight up the slope to the saddle. This was of course steep and was also on extremely loose and annoying scree, which was energy and fun sucking. From the saddle there's a few hundred feet more of steep and stupid loose scree and talus. I am sure there's a much better way of doing Hanson, because this way was utter garbage.
