Route: From West willow creek

Info: Fought off a cold and climbed 13030, 13030, and 13505 from West willow creek with Fawkes. Took a calculated risk and wore trail runners and shorts, and it paid off! Route is dry, save for the 50 feet below the pass on 505 road. I drove to 12k, could have made it to the snow at 12.5k. From there, I ascended 13030 (ranked), but didn't skirt high enough and bashed willows and marsh for 10 minutes in the dark. The east ridge has a little scrambling, but pretty straightforward. Fawkes had no issues. The rest of the day is largely tundra walking, traversing basins. Went up 13030 (unranked). Cut straight to the saddle with the 13.2k bump to the west. Followed the ridge around the horn to 13505. To descend, I followed the broad SE shoulder till I hit the CT, then followed that until it was time to basin traverse again. Went back over 13030R on the way back. My watch may have been tweaking a bit, but had it at 15 miles, 4300 vert, 7:20 car to car. Did not pause during coughing fits

Route: Spring Creek Pass

Info: A little dicey still coming off Point 13,162, with some steep chutes filled with snow. Traversed through it carefully and used poles for balance as I was starting to posthole around 10am. Do not go directly to the saddle with 13,162 — it's too steep and lots of snow. Wild Wanderer has a good description of this with pictures. From the saddle, I actually took the trail around and up a snow free slope to the ridge, where I dropped my pack and did the Top 400 feet with light weight.

Route: From Spring Creek Pass

Info: Did as a loop with 13162 and 13020. Lots of snow in the Mesa still. Spikes were nice on the way in, snowshoes mandatory to get out. I was postholing up to my waist at noon and it was a long slog. I took the upper route in the basin and hit 13162 first: there's a recent avalanche that goes directly across the trail, caused by a falling cornice. That whole side looks prone to cornice falls: avoid it if possible and take the basin, it's worth the extra elevation gain. Snow on ridges and snow in gullies on ridges was avoidable. I used my ice axe to summit 13162 and again descending into the basin on my way down before ascending the snow mesa. I used microspikes, snowshoes, and my ice axe.

Route: Via Point 13,162 A
Posted On: 9/3/2019, By: supranihilest
Info: The "hardest" peak on this route, it's actually far easier than it looks from peaks en route. On the way it appears to have a bunch of scrambling and notches but it's entirely Class 2 on the east side. Getting off of Point 13,162 A is honestly the crux, since you have to make a winding descent on steep Class 2 talus and boulders to the Colorado Trail, then hike the trail for a few tenths of a mile, then reascend steep talus and grass. The ridge does not go direct to the saddle, either up or down. Once on 13,510 A's upper slopes it's obvious the remaining hike can be kept at Class 2. Photos: the ridge from the west (looks like it might contain some scrambling) and then the ridge from the south (where it becomes clear it's just Class 2 talus).
