Route: from Velocity basin

Info: Approached from Velocity basin to the point where 3 ridges converge, then booted up to the summit of Tower (should have skinned the 2nd half of the ridge). Dropped the east face directly off the summit and reclimbed back to the ridge. After that we skied the 2nd line of the day back to Velocity basin.

Route: From Velocity Basin
Posted On: 6/10/2022, By: Tweedie
Info: The road to velocity basin is clear and the lake is still frozen. I had planned to climb the Grande Couloir, but it was almost dry (see pictures) most of the other couloirs were dry too. I managed to find one couloir east of East Storm that looked like it went to the top with snow. I climbed the couloir and then across the ridge to Tower Mountain. Then back the marked trail leading to velocity. There were some leftover cornices on the trail back to velocity that made things a little tricky, but not bad. The snow (what little that's left) was good and the couloir was fun.

Route: Boulder Gulch
Posted On: 5/27/2022, By: osprey
Info: This is a nice peak a little north of Silverton It has about 4000 foot gain over 5.7 miles to the summit ( as measured by my Garmin watch which may have some relation to reality). The first 1.4 miles is on a road with minimal elevation gain. The road ends where the trail crosses over Boulder Gulch on a 12 inch wide metal foot bridge. The trail then makes a steep ascent on the east side of the creek and follows the Gulch into a high basin. The trail recrosses the creek high up at a relatively narrow and shallow spot. From there the trail goes to the saddle between Tower Mountain on the east and Velocity Peak to the west. At the saddle the trail turns back south. Two false summits have to be climbed before the real summit which has an about 10 foot high metal tower. It looks like a long way from the saddle to the real summit but it goes faster than expected. Great views to Sneffels and the Vestal group.

Info: From the parking area at the end of CR52 head east up grassy slopes. There's at least one, possibly more trail(s). Go to the high ridge and then turn south. Follow the ridge to Tower Mountain. There's a trail along most of the ridge.

Route: Hematite Gulch Trail
Posted On: 7/15/2019, By: piper14er
Info: Hematite Trail from CR2 at just before the bridge over the Las Animas River. Trail clear of snow for most of the trail with moderately sloping snowfields in sections. I did not use any microspikes, etc. Trail has a lot of switchbacks. Ridge to the peak is free of snow. Attempted the traverse to Dome Mountain but was stopped by steep downclimb from connecting ridge at the saddle. Downclimb would have been needed to bypass and since I am still recovering from a rotator cuff surgery I did not feel comfortable with the extra work. Also a nasty thunderstorm came in early and I decided to get back over the Tower ridge and down. Even with that, the lightning was bad, lightning, thunder, boom, no counting in between. I am adding pics of the other peaks to shown snow amounts.
