Peak Condition Updates

Route: From grizzley/silver

Info: Climbed this puppy this morning. There are a few annoying patches of snow going up the talus field to gain the ridge. That talus field is AWFUL. Like worse than Vestals "class two" ridiculous talus field..significantly. I found it easiest to stay far left going up the talus field, then going down center (and just weaving around the snow patches on the loose rock). This bicentennial is beautiful save for the talusfield. Once your on the actual ridge it's an absolute breeze, and beautiful too. Almost looks like wetterhorns summit. Down lower there was just one small snow crossing on the trail between the main handies peak trail and the lake below 13,801.

Route: From Grizzly Gulch

Info: Concur with devil_in_sky’s report. Didn’t bring snow gear and almost regretted it. Given all the talk about dry conditions in the San Juans this year, I was surprised that a fair amount of weaving around the bulletproof snow was required, adding even more agony to the ascent of that steep talus slope. Everything else about the climb was pretty obvious and straightforward.

Route: Silver Creek / Grizzly Gulch TH
Posted On: 8/18/2024, By: Ssgustafson
Info: After departing the bustling Silver Creek/Grizzly Gulch TH, the first 2.2 miles are on the well maintained trail towards Handies Peak. Cross the creek to the left at an unmarked point (37.92182, -107.49004) heading ESE and pickup a faint trail leading up toward the lake. The trail dies out on the East side of the lake at about 12,350'. From here ascend 700 vertical feet up a slip-n-slide scree slope to a large cairn at about 13,040'. This is the only lousy part of the hike, as the rest of the route is on a beautiful grassy slope to 13,650', and then on the equally nice grassy ridge over to the summit block. The summit block looks imposing but is a straightforward Class 2 scramble up about 50' vertical. 7.8 miles RT and 4.5 hours from car to car. I will leave my GPS track in the Library.

Route: From Handies Peak

Info: Long but faster than the distance would indicate. The initial descent off Handies is steep and loose on superchoss kitty litter garbage, and as you descend the first major drop in the ridge you'll have to do some Class 2+, arguably Class 3 rock that is steep and incredibly loose. This section is a hundred feet or so and it cannot be stated enough how loose the rock here is. Take caution! Beyond that there are no difficulties. From the low point with 13,795 there's a faint trail through the talus slope that will take you to just below 13,795. It's well worth finding this trail as it undoubtedly saves tons of time and effort sidehilling on otherwise crappy talus. The summit block itself is kind of steep and loose but not difficult at all. We continued to "Campbell Creek Peak" so I can't speak to the north ridge descent that many people take.

Info: Summer conditions. Totally dry. You can find plenty of nice game trails in the upper portion of Campbell Creek, but the lower section is a total mess (at least the way I went).
