6/6/2022 Route: East Ridge Posted On: 6/6/2022, By: Istoodupthere Info: Snow free until you get to the summit ridge. As I got closer, the snow looked to be covering the ridge so I traversed below and gained the ridge around the false summit directly below the summit. Lots of loose talus and some scree. On the way down I stayed on the ridge and realized the snow was mostly avoidable. Easiest thing to do is gain the ridge around 13,100, cross a bit of snow, then stay on the right side of the ridge going up. Some graupel and light showers after noon. Oh and the peak that is a few hundred yards south of where the summit register and wind break are is actually the high point. So there's that. River crossing before Nutras Creek TH is maybe 4 inches deep. Passable with any vehicle. Nutras Creek crossing is maybe 6 inches deep tops |

9/4/2021 Route: North Slopes Posted On: 9/6/2021, By: CheapCigarMan Info: After leaving the woods this becomes willow central. Though, easy enough to follow the alleys and avenues through them. Posts have been erected to mark the trail. They do continue on marking the Cebolla Trail. You'll exit the trail around 12,400' which leads to Baldy Chato as well. Trail is unmarked from there, grassy slopes and saddles, some stable rock as well. On the return from the saddle west of Stewart instead of hugging the ridge I descended and maintained around 13,050' until the north slope of Chato to avoid regaining elevation and mileage. Probably a toss up between not gaining elevation & mileage and walking on the side of the slope. Lots of elk and deer in the area. Even seen a pretty large moose cross the road to Cebolla TH. Very gently and peaceful mountain. |

8/22/2021 Route: East Ridge Posted On: 8/23/2021, By: durkan Info: Ascended from San Luis side via Baldy Alto with the pup, descended via Nutras Creek. Entire route can be kept as class 1 with poles. I found poles to be helpful descending Stewart. Having a track 100% helps find the trail while descending. As the route description describes, follow low in the boulder field, at times it felt like I was almost hiking in the creek as well! Trail ranges from easy to slightly gamey at times. IF you ever lose it, just find some high ground and look toward the creek, or hike parallel the creek the entire time. If light out and your eyes are peeled, it isn't bad After doing this route, however, I suggest doing it from the north. |

7/2/2021 Route: East Ridge Posted On: 7/8/2021, By: CairnColorado Info: Summer conditions. Only encountered an elderly gentleman & his relative from Texas. Stumbled upon a moose, a silent giant. Would not confuse this for class one, as the trail doesn't go all the way to the summit & requires some route-finding. However, it is friendly enough if you have a good sense of direction. |

6/23/2021 Route: East Ridge Posted On: 6/27/2021, By: Peak200 Info: No snow to cross anywhere. Did the loop clockwise with Baldy Alto. Didn't see a soul all day long. Climbed up along the ridge to the north of Baldy Alto Then up the south side of Stewart. Down the east side of Stewart was not fun on loose talus. No trail for 75 percent of the way. Somewhat of a trail About the last two 2 miles on the west side of Nutras creek. If you want to add to your centennial list in An area with 0 people this is it . Number 75 for me. Class 1 the entire way. 9 hours. 3900 vertical and 11 miles. |

11/6/2020 Route: East Ridge Posted On: 11/6/2020, By: Unknown Info: Combo with Alto. I'd be wary on the East face if the snow is any deeper than I encountered. Good chance for a slide. Good route finders won't have a problem gaining the ridge. This time of year a solid wind blown cornice is building and allows you to gain the summit after coming up one of the gulleys. Traverse to BA had sugar snow mixed with talus and the descent was somewhat type 2 fun with sugar snow. Lots of wildlife out (Mostly posting for future reference) |

6/20/2020 Route: East Ridge Posted On: 6/21/2020, By: mtnkub Info: Above 13,100 ft, a snow field still blocked the easiest path on the ridge. Bypass south (left) to regain the ridge at 13,400 ft via ~20ft of 2+/3- rock. A bypass to the north would regain the ridge lower, but looked looser. Rest of the route (and loop over Baldy Alto) is dry. |

6/12/2020 Route: North Slopes Posted On: 6/12/2020, By: KarenG Info: The stream crossing in the route description is further up the trail than stated. I hit it at 0.45 miles from the TH. The stated distance of 7.6 miles for this route seems to be a little off too. I downloaded the GPX route from the site and when I open it in Google Earth it shows 8.8 miles round trip. That seems reasonable since my GPS said I did 9.1 miles on this route. The vegetation is starting to green up and fill in. This makes the trail a little harder to spot in places both in the trees and in the willows. The GPX track was spot on to help find the way through the willows. |
