Peak Condition Updates

Route: East Ridge
Posted On: 5/3/2025, By: emilysharpe24
Info: Some new snow accumulation but not enough to need snowshoes. Got a little bit later start than ideal so some post hole coming down off of the saddle between London and Kuss. Mosquito Pass Road (CR 12) Is pretty much dry until about 6 miles in. A couple of lingering snowfields on road. Could’ve used traction on the ridge going up to Kuss but kick stepped fine.

Route: Loop: Kuss, Mosquito, Treasurevault
Posted On: 6/23/2024, By: happyallyy
Info: London Mtn + Kuss Pk + Mosquito Pk + Treasurevault Mtn + Mt Tweto today. Encountered a few minor snowfields, but had no issues completing the route in my trail runners. Snow crossings were: short one near the mine (before the saddle), a patch to reach the summit of Kuss, and one along the ridge to Mt Tweto. I carried my spikes but never felt the need to pull them out. While some of the peaks are still holding snow on the face (we did see one skier out there today), the route itself is nearly in summer conditions, more details in the photos! For the whole route, my Garmin tracked 9.91 miles + 3,997 ft of gain.

Info: Parked lower on the east side of mosquito pass. Generally speaking dry as a bone on the actual ridge itself and summit. The most snow is on the road leading up to the ridge. It gets a little slick just past the North London mine. It's about 1-2 inches MAX so it's completely doable without traction. There's also a small snow patch coming down from Mosquito Pass. Completely avoidable though

Info: Mosquito Pass from the 2WD parking is a small creek with all the water running down it. One small snow field to cross by the mine and one avoidable snow field on the ridge to the summit. 3 large and some what deep puddles to cross on the road in just before the turnoff for the parking area.

Route: Loop: Kuss, Mosquito, Treasurevault

Info: Did the loop including London and Tweto. Both roads from the parking area are streams with lots of water. The deep puddle just below the parking spot is still there, and gets deeper during the day. There are some snowfields in spots, up past north London Mine. Ridge to London is mostly all dry and any snow is avoidable. More snow on Kuss, especially on the summit, but rather firm. East slopes of Mosquito still have a lot of coverage from summit, can probably get a 1000 foot vertical run. Most of the unavoidable snow is along the ridge from Treasurevault to Tweto, less while ascending Tweto. Postholed a bit there. I didn't use traction but found poles helpful. The stream in the road going up to the London mine had an iced over surface in the morning. Very windy day.

Route: Loop from West Mosquito Pass
Posted On: 2/25/2023, By: daway8
Info: Great approach from West Mosquito Pass - tons of snowmobile tracks pack down the road until just below the switchbacks at about 12k. West side is adequately wind blown to not currently have avy danger. Made it up in boots without issue though a couple times maybe should have pulled out traction. Went on to do Mosquito, Treasure Vault and London as well - will add some notes separately for those peaks for easy future reference.

Info: We did the Tweto -> Treasurevault -> Mosquito -> Kuss loop yesterday and winter is definitely here. There is between 4" and 2' of snow pretty much throughout the entire route. Two of us wore microspikes for the entire distance, two others took them off at the top of Tweto -- either was probably fine, but bringing them doesn't seem like a mistake. Most postholing can be avoided, but expect to just be stuck down to your knees half a dozen times throughout the route. For pictures, see the conditions report on Tweto.

Route: West Ridge

Info: A beautiful and windy day out there. Forecasted 38 mph gusts did not materialize while I was hiking but it definitely was windy. I took an unconventional route. I drove CR3 from Leadville and parked near Conley Lakes. From there, I hiked up the Mosquito Pass Rd from the Leadville side, to the pass. From the pass, I started hiking up the super gentle West Ridge to the summit. My Gaia tracked it at 7.23miles RT and 2,274 ft. Only a handful of Razrs and one Jeep. Beautiful day.

Info: Puddles at the TH were much deeper than last year. Really green right now from all the rain. Descent off of Mosquito requires some extra attention. Otherwise, this is a great route with nice views!

Info: Sorry to have missed the welcomer today, but had a good day in the Mosquito Range nonetheless! Condition notes common to overall route (London Mountain West Ridge + Kuss -> Mosquito -> Treasurevault Loop): Brought microspikes, but didn't use them the entire route. There is definitely snow there, but for the most part it can be avoided and when it can't you're doing some short 4-6” postholes or when hardened the snowfield section is too short to make putting spikes on worth it. Beautiful weather. A lot of the route there was no wind but when it was there it was measured as only 10-15 mph and briefly 20-25 mph at worst. Temperatures measured high 20s to start with but got all the way into the low 40s on the ridges and summits later in the day. Condition notes specifically for the Kuss part of the route: Heading up the east ridge from the Kuss-London Saddle was steep and talusy but not too bad. Snowfields here and there that could be avoided or weren't too much trouble.

Info: IMO Kuss was the crux of the route. I'm glad I did this counterclockwise as I preferred to have ascended Kuss. No traction or flotation needed. Kuss had crusty snow towards the summit.

Info: Nothing new to report on this loop except that the large mud puddles before the trailhead are now driveable. They're deep but my truck had no issues and I saw a Crosstrek get through as well.

Route: Loop: Kuss, Mosquito, Treasurevault

Info: 4wd road was snow covered in places but we were able to drive to the parking spots in front of the true off road part of mosquito pass. We took the summer trail up to Tweto wearing spikes, left ice axes and snowshoes in the car. We were passed by some guys later on that broke the rest of the trail, thanks! We followed their tracks and cut up tweto before the gully/saddle section. It was steep, deep snow in stops with loose rocks, 2 of us had poles, 1 nothing, she wished she had her axe with her for support. Those guys headed to Arkansas and we didn't see them again. We continued on to treasurevault, mosquito and kuss, making a loop. The ridge was a mix of rock and deep snow patches that were not supportive. We discussed if snow shoes would have helped and decided based on the bare sections we would have been putting them on and off all day or scraping them on the rock. We suffered with the postholing. Spikes stayed on all day, could have used the axe on a few snow fields. The descent off Kuss held some of the deepest snow all day, be careful of the hiding rock, mosquito Pass Road off Kuss was covered in more snow then expected, we stuck to the outside edge where it was less deep. Overall not bad for Dec, lacking snow for sure, but enough to make everything extra work. Get it while you can!
