Info: Snow is mostly avoidable on the ridge. One small firm field on northeast slope of Flora that can be bypassed. Plenty of skiers on south slopes, coverage looked good.

Route: Berthoud Pass

Info: Did CO Mines, Flora, and Eva. Packed snow from the parking lot to mines summit. After that it was a mix of dry ground and packed snow the rest of the way. Some trapdoor snow below the Eva summit but not a big deal. Brought snowshoes and spikes but didnt need. Absolutely perfect day and a perfect almost winter hike. No people, no wind, no clouds. Make sure you go over CO Mines and dont use the Mt Flora trail that goes right under avalanche terrain on CO Mines N and NW face.

Route: Traverse from Mt Flora
Posted On: 1/1/2024, By: sunbleached
Info: I traversed from Berthoud Pass up Mt. Flora, Mt. Eva, Witter Peak, and Parry Peak. All three were in much better shape compared to the wind-stricken fun that occurred the week before. I went up Mt. Flora after hitting Colorado Mines Peak. From this south ridge, there are no issues, and the trail is extremely easy to follow with only minor windcrusts. Most of the snow was scoured off. The north ridge of Mt. Flora was nearly completely covered in wind-hardened snow slabs - the kind that CAIC said in their forecast is the only kind of slope you should watch out for. Yay! Anyway, I stuck left (west) and made it down with only a couple crossings of the slab. I then went up Witter Peak for great views all around, then headed toward Mt. Eva. The gentle south and north ridges made for an easy ascent, with more scoured wind. After touching Parry Peak, I headed back toward Mt. Flora and Colorado Mines Peak.

Route: East Ridge
Posted On: 7/4/2023, By: nedryarson
Info: Climbed Eva's East Ridge starting from east side of Chinns Lake. Gullies to gain ridge above Slater Lake were dry but we had to drop a ways off the ridge to avoid a steep snow field a bit higher up. One other manageable ~30 yard section of steeper snow just before the summit. Descended back into the Chinns Lake basin, some fun and easy glissade opportunities coming down before a soggy bushwack back to Slater Lake. Gaia showed just over 5 miles and 2100ft gain.

Route: Via Mt Flora

Info: Hiked Colorado Mines, Flora and Eva from Berthoud Pass today. The road up to Mines still has lots of snow drifts on it but all but a few could be avoided and are melting quickly. Only had to cross one small snowfield below the summit of Flora and another while descending off of Flora to the saddle with Eva. Both were doable without spikes. All remaining snow over to Eva was avoidable. On the return I opted to stay high at the trail junction on the Mines/Flora saddle as it looked like the lower route still had significant snow coverage.

Route: Berthoud Pass

Info: Started the hike to Flora (and eventually Eva) at 9am. Snow is melting quickly but still significant amount from Berthoud Pass to tree line, so may want to be prepared for some postholing. Went up Colorado Mines to avoid snowfield that covers the summer Flora route; added some elevation gain but worth it to avoid snow. After Flora there's no trail but route finding is simple. Still quite a bit of snow on the summit of Eva (as of 12:30pm 06/19). There is a PVC pipe with a summit log which doesn't include a pen - if you want to log your name make sure you bring a pen! I didn't get to write my name in the log which was a minor let down. The return hike from Eva to Flora is steep and physically exhausting after a long day; make sure you leave enough in the tank to get back.

Info: No snowshoes or traction required. Largely windblown/slabby snow above treeline.probably 50/50 dry groundor rock vs snow up there. Route is a sneaky long time above treeline. 5 hours car to car

Route: Via Fall River Res

Info: Snow was essentially continuous from the Res to the summit. I kept skis/skins on the entire route other than a small stream crossing going from Fall River Res to lower Chinns lake.

Route: Berthoud Pass to Loch Lomond
Posted On: 5/28/2022, By: Carl_Healy
Info: Shuttle hiked across the Continental Divide from Berthoud Pass (Colorado Mines Peak) to Loch Lomond (Mt. Bancroft). For conditions between the other peaks see those respective updates. A note for all legs is that we carried spikes, snowshoes, crampons, and ice axes the whole way but never *really* needed them. Also gnarly cornices everywhere, and weather was surprisingly nice: temps in the 40s and winds often below 10 MPH until at least Parry Peak. Hiking from Flora to Eva on the ridge was pretty much the same as from Colorado Mines to Flora. The ridge was dry enough to avoid most snow fields and the ones that we couldn't were firm enough or not deep enough to be a problem.

Route: from Mount Flora

Info: Very little snow on the ridge to Eva from Flora. That's mostly because it's all been blown into visible cornices that can be avoided.

Route: From Berthoud Pass, via Mt Flora

Info: There is continuous snow all the way up to the upper turn off the road to the station atop Colorado Mines Peak, but it is packed and occasionally loose, but never slippery -- neither flotation nor traction needed. From there along the ridge, over Flora, all the way to Eva there is a thin layer of snow on the trail/landscape but never deep enough to warrant snow shoes, nor icy enough to warrant microspikes. That is because the trail is always on the western side of the ridge, so it is wind blasted. There are quite substantial cornices forming on the eastern/downwind side of the ridge though, and one is probably wise to stay off larger areas of snow along the ridge. On the way back, we took the shortcut across the steep slope on the northern and western slopes of Colorado Mines Peak, starting at the saddle between CMP and Mt Flora. Along the northern side, the trail slopes and is hard packed, making it a bit slippery at times. Getting out the microspikes might have helped, but we were tired and made do without. On the western side, around treeline, the snow suddenly gets very deep and a lot of postholing ensued; the trail is also lost quickly as the wind apparently deposits large amounts of snow over it right after someone else makes a trail. So we made our way over to the (lower) intersection with the zig-zagging road, but then ended up just plunge-stepping all the way back down to the parking lot. There is at present probably little avalanche danger on that shortcut trail from material sliding higher up, given that the northern and western slopes of CMP are pretty windblown. But there is a lot of material accumulating at around the elevation of the trail itself, and it will not take much longer before that slope will have enough deep snow and will become unsafe to traverse, given its slope. There are already 2-3 feet of snow just above the parking lot. Conditions up high in general were as usual in the winter: unrelenting wind, blowing snow that exfoliates every bit of unprotected skin, and wind chill below 0F. Come prepared.

Route: From Berthoud Pass

Info: Solid snow up to treeline from Berthoud Pass, then intermittent snow on the route from Colorado Mines Peak to Mt. Flora. The steep slope from Flora to the saddle with Eva has some short unavoidable snow patches. After reaching the saddle, all snow patches are avoidable to the summit of Eva. I wore micro spikes up to treeline, and while descending to the Flora-Eva saddle when crossing the snow patches early in the morning.

Route: East Approach
Posted On: 5/9/2021, By: Kieran
Info: Drove up Rainbow road but about 1 mile in the road transitioned from rough dirt road that was no problem in a Honda CRV to ice/snow that caused us to turn around and park at the Rainbow Road/Fall River Road intersection. Due to the turn around we ended up starting at 7:00 am, the snow was hard and had no problem hiking without traction/floatation until we hit Chinn's lake where we put snowshoes on. Due to it getting later in the day, we ended up bootpacking up a chute above Slater Lake for a quick couple turns and then decided to head back. On the hike back the snowshoes were definitely super helpful.
