Route: NW Ridge to Swan Dive
Posted On: 5/17/2025, By: slawrence2011
Info: I skied swan dive this morning. Started from the Breckenridge side around 7, summited at 11. Good conditions, one spot where you have to traverse through some rocks. Mix between powder, firm but edgeable up high, and good corn halfway down I took the major flume trail back across to the Breckenridge side of the ridge. It would have been better to gain the saddle, because the trail was over 3 miles, and almost entirely moderate to steep side slope. West aspects were a mix of melted out and deep cohesionless drifts over the trail. Got back to the car at 5.

Route: Northwest Ridge/Slope

Info: Great conditions on Sunday, including 2 mtn chickens. Carried snowshoes, but didn't use them. Spikes helpful gaining the ridge and I kept them on until the summit. After the saddle on the ridge we took climbers right up the NW gully to stay on the snow vs on the talus. Lots of skiers and 1 snowboarder enjoying some good looking turns. We dropped into the gully about 11:30am and plunge stepped all the way down. Back down in the trees we all post-holed some, esp narrow spots around treewells, but kept the snowshoes off. Road from parking to French Crk Trl is bone dry.

Info: The streams that were high for Danger_D a week and a half ago are no longer an issue; the NW ridge route is now in full summer conditions. But just a note: "summer conditions" means the winter route is no longer a good idea. Another hiker today and several people posting recently on another site are still trying to go up the center of the slope, and having a rough time with the remaining slush and the scree. Use Bill's GPX track instead, which leaves the rocky Little French Flume trail for an unmarked but really nice one that runs parallel about fifty feet up the slope; when you hit treeline, turn right and follow the treeline up a steep but firm, grassy slope to the ridge. The ridge is already a long talus slog; the hike *up to* the ridge doesn't have to be. P.S. Breck locals, what's the proper pronunciation? "Gee-oh" with a hard "g"? "Gi-oh," to rhyme with "Ohio"? Something else? Google turned up a bunch of conflicting answers.

Info: Pretty solid talus most of the way. There is snow with a small cornice 50ft from the summit that we bypassed on the right (NE).

Route: Tour de Guyot
Posted On: 6/22/2024, By: Danger_D
Info: Not quite summer yet. I went up the NW Ridge/Face, headed town the south ridge to French Pass and back to the via French Gulch. Going up NW Ridge the streams are pretty high but with some creativity you can stay dry. There are several snow drifts below treeline which either have a trench or are pretty easy to navigate. The south ridge of Guyot is tedious talus and 99% dry. However, there was one snow crossing which was both steep and icy and a fall would mean a long slide, so I was happy to have my spikes. Coming down French Gulch there are lots of snow fields to cross and I would say about a third of the trail is a stream. There was also a big river crossing that I had to take of my boots and wade. The tour is not really worth it unless you want to add on Bald. The mountain is a rubble bucket so it would probably be better on skis in general

Info: Parked at Sallie Barber then hiked to the left turn, skinned mostly continuously from there save one dry spot. Cooler temps and wind after the Saturday night snow left it bulletproof up high. Did not summit. I'm sure warm weather will have it nice up there.

Info: Nice day up on Guyot, lots of fresh snow today. Road was well packed, I put on snowshoes when I left the road. The route was easy to follow most of the way, I broke trail all the way to summit. The last 2 steep slopes above treeline were challenging, it was deep enough for snowshoes, but I was occasionally getting tripped up on bigger rocks, especially on descent. Some skiers were out today while I was up high, the trench was fully in by the time I made it back to treeline.

Info: There was about 4 inches of powdery snow at the summit at 10 am. The sun popped out once I got to about 12,500 ft. and the weather was glorious. A little wind at the top but sunny. Most of the route had snow, but just a few inches. There were some knee-deep drifts here and there so gaiters would have been helpful.

Info: Spikes were helpful for the steep grassy ascent (and especially descent) from the trail to the ridge. However, the slippery half inch of snow in that area might be gone by end of day. Small pockets of shallow and avoidable snow on the upper talus section below the summit. That section was pretty time-consuming, one of the wobblier (is that a word?) talus areas I've been on in a while.

Info: Hardest part was finding an easy way through 30' of willows from the end of the spur road to the start of the ridge. Rock was mostly solid and the pup did just fine. There is some snow right at the top that we skirted underneath and to the right of - it was pretty slushy and a slip wouldn't have been fun. The rock in this area was a quite a bit more loose than the rest of the hike to that point. Overall, great little route if you only have a little time to grab a peak. 2:20 RT. Read Jay's TR if you'd like more pics and an alternate descent route!

Info: A few well trodden snow patches on the trail before it breaks out of the trees, if you stay right and hug the trees there is a mostly dry path to the ridge. I instead went more up and left but had some loose and the other route would have been better, my way was dry except the cornice. A few small patches of snow on the ridge, but in generally flat areas. The steeper parts of the ridge are dry. Descended the NE ridge which is also dry (had other objectives down ridge), but you could glissade down the large snowfield if so inclined!

Info: Started 5:45am and took my sweet time on this windless bluebird morning. Skinned the northwest slope then skied the same route after summitting. Snow below the summit was very firm and consolidated and made for some of my best skiing of the season. The Little French Gulch Trail was a postholing nightmare while returning at 1030am, so do yourself a favor and start earlier than I, or pack some handy dandy snowshoes.

Info: Took the long way up. Snow was fantastic, things were a bit firm right off the summit and then everything else was very edgable. Wind should refill most of the tracks tonight. Get it before warm up this week!

Info: Summited Mount Guyot today; snow was variable, used snowshoes from the beginning of the trail after leaving the road, all the way up to about 300ft away from the summit. Switched to microspikes and had some bulletproof sections throughout the rocks. Coming down, the upper slopes were fine with snowshoes and an ice axe for stability, but crampons would have worked better. Saw some skiers today going down the gully - we took the ridge up and was a fantastic day.
