10/20/2012 Route: Guanella Pass Posted On: 10/22/2012, By: jonandmalia Info: Awesome morning, a little chilly, but not bad. No issues with snow or ice. Wind picked up considerably near and at summit. Wind chill put us in low 20s. Beautiful day otherwise. Stopped at freezing pond at 12k' for lunch and enjoyed the views of Bierstadt and the Sawtooth. |

3/10/2012 Route: From Guanella road closure Posted On: 3/10/2012, By: CarpeDM Info: Climbed Gray Wolf Mtn (13,602ft - Ranked 190) from the Guanella road closure. Didn’t plan it out on the map so we were thinking it would be about 9 - 10 miles. Turned out to be about 11.5, but still didn’t quite get to 3k gained (2,911 ft on my GPS). * Road is packed snow from the closure up to just before the pass. * The restrooms in the parking lot are open and stocked with TP. We followed the standard Bierstadt trail until a bit before the creek crossing. Then we just walked across the frozen lake/marsh area up Scott Gomer Creek (not advised for the trip back in the afternoon). As we approached the northern edge at about 11,500 - 11,600, we started our trench-building. This lasted about 500 feet up to just above the pond at about 12,100 where we stashed our snowshoes. Above that, there was open tundra mixed with some generally shallow, bulletproof snow. Also, got a look at Squaretop-Argentine-Wilcox from this side, but the image is too big to upload. Pics: 1) Our route 2) Overview 3) Crossing the lake/marsh. We pass the trees that are on the left before we head up to the left. 4) Above the snowshoe cache More pics available on request. |
