Snowmass Peak

Peak Condition Updates

Route: From Hagerman
Posted On: 10/1/2023, By: Laxer04
Info: Traversed over from Hagerman Peak to the Hagerman/Snowmass Peak saddle and up to the summit. Descended via the gulley beneath the Hagerman/Snowmass saddle. Summer conditions. Peak fall colors probably a week away or so. The descent from Hagerman to the saddle takes careful route finding on rotten and loose rock. Tread carefully. The gulley down was loose and the bottom rewards you will a massive loose boulder field. In hindsight we probably should have taken the ridge over to Trail Rider pass and down from there.

Route: Chossineer's (Southwest) Couloir
Posted On: 7/18/2023, By: supranihilest
Info: Lead King Basin loop is fully open. Geneva Lake trail to treeline is in good shape, has one mandatory ford. To bottom of couloir there is some inconsequential snow. Couloir itself is about 40 degrees and very loose. Snow in the middle section, which we used just microspikes and axe for - crampons may be more comfortable for some. Above the snow in the middle it's the same super loose rock. We went to about 150 below the saddle with Hagerman then climber's right up a dirt ramp (microspikes were kept on) then we zig-zagged up the loose south face (Class 2+) to a small saddle on the east ridge. Left snow gear here and scrambled up Class 3, fairly solid rock to the summit. This short scramble was the only good part of the peak. Reversed our route exactly being very careful not to knock rocks on each other in the couloir. There was massive rockfall adjacent to us on the south face.
