Huron Peak

Peak Condition Updates
8/1/2017
Route: Northwest Slopes
Posted On: 8/1/2017, By: Flyingfish
Info: The trail is dry and loaded with switchbacks which sucked after climbing La Plata two hours earlier. Do make sure that your pets are under control since even on a Tuesday there were probably 30 people on the mountain.

Route: North Ridge from Lulu Gulch
Posted On: 7/22/2017, By: thomasdds
Info: Trail description was very accurate. Once off the 2WD road no other hikers on this route until intersecting with the standard route to the summit. Much more wildlife sightings on Browns Peak: mountain goats, marmots, sage hen with her chicks etc. None on Huron due to dogs and crowds. Great weather. If you enjoy 14ers this should be your standard route.

Info: Great 14er for 1st timers, kids, elderly, etc. Three small snow crossings noted in report below are still there but not problematic in any way. 2 of them now have mildly muddy, but completely snowless, paths through them. The third, which is the first you encounter, is still in the tree area so might hold snow for another week or so but has very defined and solid boot pack to follow making it a non-issue. Left trailhead around 5:30am, on summit at 7:50am, back at car at 9:40am.

Route: Southwest Slopes
Posted On: 7/6/2017, By: Skyline
Info: The SW trail is faint around tree line (after split off that goes to old cabins) and we lost it entirely in avalanche debris. Ended up cutting up to the ridge too early even with GPS and didn't get past small cliffs and scree around 13000. Snow wasn't an issue other than the avalanche debris near tree line. We were the only ones on this route that day, definitely not well used but absolutely gorgeous views of The Three Apostles. Worth the hike even sans summiting.

Info: Great conditions. Still three small snow fields but I suspect on will disappear by the end of today. Beautiful day and beautiful views!

Route: North Ridge from Lulu Gulch
Posted On: 6/27/2017, By: SolarAlex
Info: Hiked Huron via the standard route and then went over the ridgeline to lulu gulch for our exit...The ridgeline is dry, with one snowy patch between browns and unnamed 13xxx . The road down into lulu gulch was dry until you get below treeline , and then there are a few snow patches in the shaded areas. Water flowing across the road for about 200 yards required taking shoes off to walk through it...brisk! All in all, basically summer conditions.

Info: No traction or snowshoes needed. Summer conditions.
In the upper basin near 12,000, there is a snow field you'll have to cross, but it's flat and melting fast.

Info: Summer conditions! There are three small snowfields remaining, but they are completely flat and have footpaths worn in - melting fast, no traction needed. There is a portion of the trail that has become a small stream, remember to just walk through it, its only about 2 inches high - do not create a side trail, this damages the fragile tundra ecosystem!

Info: Very little snow left on the route! What's left is very packed down and was easy to traverse on the way up and down. Started at about 3:45AM and was able to make summit by 6:15AM. The summit was beautiful and the route was clear!

Info: In order to avoid the wet conditions and to hike for longer than we drove, we took the tour of Huron (pt 12600, Middle Mtn, pt 13462, Brown's Peak, Huron Peak)
We started around 5:00 from the 2WD trail head. Some good camp sites along Lulu Gulch road. Some large drifts remain on Lulu Gulch road but were firm before 6:00. The “avy zone'. is snow free. Lulu Gulch stream crossings were all manageable-no wet feet here.

Took switch backs up Middle Mountain. Gerry Roach describes the route as a rapidly deteriorating 4WD road; as of this season it is probably not fair to describe this “road' as class 1. Slides have narrowed the road in places to the width of a boot and the consistency of the leeward side of a sand dune. See picture
All of the 13er summits are dry. There is still a small (30 step) post-holey snow field on the way up Brown's peak which does not require traction.

To stoke the ire of JQDivide, there is a second graffiti-ed rock on Huron's summit. Also, to keep SAR in business, lots of footprints on the top of the cornice on Huron.
Descended via the standard route, snow field near 12,300 is Slushy consistency.

Info: Water update: Some water, but with my low rise boots I didn't get my socks wet. They are waterproof.

One note: no pooping on top of 14ers! There is a soiled section on top of Mt. Huron completed by toilet paper.

Great day for a hike, the smoke/haze wasn't bad during the hike. Just under 5 hours round trip from the 4 wheel drive road.

Info: You're gonna get soaked! The snowfield mentioned by others recently has a huge river running under/thru it. Water was mid shin deep, so if you have waterproof boots and gaiters you may make it thru. I hike in minimalist shoes, so water comes in, water goes out, so if you're okay with wet feet/legs, go for it. But since you're going to get wet no matter what, let's help preserve the area and just walk straight thru where there's a track, and not branch out hoping for dry feet. Or wait a couple of weeks :)

Info: Only a few places in the trees with snow across the trail, not much trouble at all without traction. The basin is still full of snow, but not too challenging to walk across. A pretty cool view with all of the pocketing. Also no traction required. After crossing the basin the trail is clear the rest of the way to the summit. A perfect early summer 14er!

Info: Such a beautiful hike. There are a couple of snow patches around 11,000 feet, but they should be gone in the next couple of days with how warm it has been. We started at 5:30 AM from the lower trailhead and got to see a beautiful sunrise in the valley. Hiking through the trees was a treat but also deceiving because when you get above treeline you see how far/how much elevation you have left to gain. We got to the big snow field around 7:30 AM and it was still solid. Not post-holing. Neither snowshoes or spikes are needed. I do recommend water proof hiking boots. Everything past the snow field is completely dry. We summited just before 9 and hung out for about an hour and enjoyed the view. Heading back down was easy but if you're not wearing waterproof shoes it could be miserable. There is a natural spring that runs down the rocks at about 12,800 ft that picks up in the late morning with the high snow melt. Same thing when you get back into treeline. There is another small stream that was easy to cross in the morning, but by 12 there weren't any shallow rocks to step on and the water was moving quickly. If you park in the lower parking lot there is quite a wide river that you'll have to cross and getting your feet wet in the AM before your hike has even started could make for a miserable day. We got back to our car at the lower lot at 1 PM. This was the best 14er to kick off summer and definitely would love to return to camp in the valley by the river.
