5/16/2011 Route: Northeast Ridge Posted On: 5/17/2011, By: Rastaman566 Info: Summitted Sunshine and Redcloud on 5/16/11. Road is open and in good condition up the the Grizzly Gulch TH. Observations: There was a lot of snow up there. There were large wind slabs everywhere up there, and most easternly aspects had large cornices. Slide racks were visible below the easternly cornices and southern aspects (wet slides). Be especially careful on the Sunshine side of the Sunshine/Redcloud saddle. The large cornices there are hard to get around and they may become worse with the additional snow that we will be getting Wednesday-Thursday. Sounds like we won‘t have to worry too much about wet slide activity during this cold stretch thats coming up, but at the same time I wouldn‘t trust those cornices loaded with anymore snow. While I was on Sunshine I noticed that Handies looked particularly dangerous from Grizzly Gulch given it‘s easter approach and all the large cornices I could see. The weather was fantastic Monday, but the wind did pick up later in the day. When I left the TH this morning it had been snowing for a couple hours already. I‘ll upload photos or just complete a TR when I get back to Colorado Springs. |
