Route: Northeast Ridge

Info: Continuous snow from about 12000‘. Intermittent small snow patches on the trail before that. Wore snowshoes from 12k for the remainder of the way to Redcloud and Sunshine. We were breaking trail through roughly ankle deep powder from the basin up the NE Ridge. Previous reporter‘s tracks were erased by the storm on Saturday night / Sunday. Snow covers the entire traverse between Redcloud / Sunshine as well. NE face would be in to ski from the summit right now. Photo #1: Looking back down into the basin below the NE Ridge. Photo #2: Look at the NE Face of Redcloud Photo #3: Looking back at Redcloud from Sunshine

Info: Went after Redcloud and Sunshine on Saturday 5-24-2014. Left the TH at 6:30am and found a snow-free trail for about 3 miles. Near tree-line the snow began in earnest and from here on out snowshoes were helpful. Once on the ridgeline to Redcloud and then over to Sunshine there are periodic patches of snow and clear trail. I was fortunate to leave early, make good time (RT 6.5 hours) and only post-holed a few times back to the trail. If you left much later the hike out could be tough. Pic 1: the snow really starts here and looking back down trail. Pic 2: same spot looking up the trail Pic 3: me on Redcloud summit but the background peaks are Unc/Wet (fyi)

Info: Large storm Friday with snow up until 6 pm. Snow/ice from the parking lot up. From 12k to 13k in the basin broke trail through 6-12 inches of snow. Less snow from the saddle to the top likely from wind scour. Coming back in the afternoon the light snow/ice below the basin was melted off.

Info: Very wet conditions on trail. Snowing and windy at top of peak. Probably not dry enough for accumulation of snow, but it was raining all day down below. No snow accumulation was visible on the trail.

Info: Trail is 98% clear of snow. We had to cross 3-4 very small snowfields and post-holed maybe 3 times tops! (first 14er this year with little to no post-holing is very exciting!) It was our first time up there and we never lost the route. Silver Creek is raging! The trail on the saddle over to Sunshine has some snow covering it, but route finding was not and should not be an issue.

Route: west slopes northern gully
Posted On: 4/26/2013, By: syzygy01
Info: Drove all the way into the silver creek trailhead. The trail is mostly dry until the trail forks at 11300‘. After crossing silver creek skinning is recommended to avoid post holing. The northern gully is continuous snow until about 100‘ below the north ridge. Once on the north ridge there is a questionable band of snow provided by a cornice that may yield a ski descent from the summit. The southern gully also looked in.

Info: For both Redcloud and Sunshine Peaks there was no snow below treeline. Above that there was only a couple of inches covering the trail but not causing any route finding/following issues. The basin on the otherhand had about calf deep snow in it, at times making the trail a little harder to find. Cairns marked the trail well. Still nothing a pair of light hikers and a pair of gaiters couldn‘t handle. Brought micro spikes but they weren‘t necessary.

Info: It‘s all clear up there. You‘d have to go off the trail to find any snow patches to jump in.

Info: Did the Redcloud/Sunshine combo on Tuesday, and this area looks like it late July. The trail holds a few isolated snow fields on the way up Redcloud that are easily skirted, no traction required.

Info: Did the Redcloud/Sunshine combo today, great conditions on both mtns. Crampons are not needed, but I did have to use my snowshoes once after falling through the snow up to my chest while crossing one of the high fields between the two mtns. I had a heck of a time getting out and almost lost my boot. While descending I saw that I could have avoided the field almost entirely by climbing higher. Oh well. Bottom line - snowshoes aren‘t necessary and there are some short but fun glissades on the way down.

Info: As in the last conditions report, some shrinking snow fields from around 12,300 to 12,800 that soften by mid to late morning but really are not much of a problem. The biggest issue I had was a snow field covering the standard trail about mid-way from cresting the northeast ridge to the false summit. It was soft early. I tried to avoid it to climber‘s right but encountered very loose terrain - recommend NOT attempting that way. I descended to the right of it on the way down (climber‘s left) with better success. No other issues. The snow is entirely avoidable between Redcloud and Sunshine. The final pitch to Sunshine is a little loose but not too bad.
