The ranch staff packed down the road from HQ to Four Way the day before with a snowmobile. There was a dusting of fresh snow overnight but nothing too crazy. After Four Way and to the ridge, we followed in ScreeSurfer's footsteps. Thanks for breaking trail John. We got on the ridge right from the summer trailhead instead of ascending the Northwest slopes as we were concerned with the potential for avalanches. Once on the ridge, the wind was unrelenting. The gusts never got too wild but the consistent wind really sucked all the energy out of us, on top of bringing a windchill between -10 and -20 according to the forecast. Cold! Some of us are reporting some frostnip the next day. We could see the valley and the surrounding peaks fairly well through the day but the summit of Culebra was in the clouds most of the time.

#1) From Four Way to the summer trailhead. Thanks for breaking trail John!#2) Going up the ridge. The wind was windy.#3#4) The Blanca group and Lindsey in the distance#5#6

What conditions of particular note convinced you to avoid the Northwest slope?

The slopes get around 30 degrees and with the last rounds of storm they hold more snow than earlier this winter when going up the Northwest slopes was still a no brainer. NW aspects are not really included in the CAIC forecasts these days but with how touchy the snowpack has been all season, getting on the ridge right away seemed like an easy way to mitigate any danger on that side.

That's fair. I'm considering skiing it in a couple weeks and the additional beta helps tremendously...Sounds like a burley day y'all had with the windchill factor. Props on pushing through that!
