The mountain's name, which denotes a paradoxical, insoluble, or difficult problem, evidently comes from the creek and hot springs of the same name found near Castle Peak. Prospectors originally named the creek after finding traces of gold and following the stream upward to its source in a fruitless search for the Mother Lode. In this respect, Conundrum Peak is a somewhat distant cousin of Quandary Peak, whose name denotes a state of perplexity or doubt, and which was named by a group of miners who were unable to identify a mineral specimen from its slopes.
