The Hayden U.S. Government Survey of 1874 originally named the peak "Maroon Mountain" for its distinctive color. Locals began calling the Mountain the "Maroon Bells" for the two prominent bell-shaped tops that form its twin 14,000-foot summits. The southern bell later became known as "Maroon Peak," and its northern neighbor became known as "North Maroon Peak." |
