The mountain was named by the chief topographer for the Wheeler U.S. Government Survey, J.C. Spiller, who made its first ascent in 1874. Impressed by the beautiful color and form of the mountain, he suggested the aptly descriptive name of "Redcloud." The peak had earlier been called "Red Mountain" on H.G. Prout's map for Lieutenant E.H. Ruffner's expedition of 1873 and on the maps of the Hayden Survey of 1874. In the 1890s, the mountain was also known as "Jones Peak." |
