Fit, fast endurance hikers can complete the Challenger and Kit Carson combination as a single-day push from the trailhead, but backpacking into Willow Lake is highly recommended. The camping area nestled near the lakeshore at 11,560 feet is exceptionally beautiful, featuring dramatic waterfalls, clear alpine waters, and steep cliff walls that look right up at the mountain. Splitting the trek into a two-day backpacking trip allows you to enjoy one of the most scenic alpine lake basins in the Sangre de Cristo range and gives you fresh legs early the next morning to tackle the brutal, steep headwall leading to Challenger's summit ridge.

Challenger Point is rated as a non-technical Class 2 hike, but wearing a climbing helmet is strongly recommended once you reach the ugly, loose terrain on the upper North Slope. Because this steep area is incredibly loose and acts as a natural bottleneck, hikers climbing above you can easily dislodge rocks. Protecting your head from unpredictable, human-triggered rockfall is essential for a safe ascent through this section.

Yes, but other options are more difficult. Technical routes like the Class 4 North Ridge or the remote Spanish Creek approaches are sometimes used, but most hikers take the combination route via Challenger Point. The standard trail from Willow Lake leads you straight onto Challenger's ridge line; to reach Kit Carson Avenue, you are forced to climb completely over Challenger's 14,081-foot summit. This makes it a mandatory doubleheader, requiring you to re-climb Challenger on the return trek back to your camp.

While the main peak is named after the 19th-century frontiersman Kit Carson, its two prominent sub-peaks serve as permanent, solemn memorials to America's fallen astronauts. Geographically, unranked 14er Challenger Point and 13er Columbia Point are not entirely isolated mountains; they are high-altitude shoulder points that sit along the massive, serrated ridge lines of the main Kit Carson Peak structure. Challenger Point was officially named to honor the seven crew members lost in the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, and a custom bronze plaque is bolted directly into its summit block. Following the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy, the adjacent high-altitude point formerly known as "Kat Carson" was officially renamed Columbia Point to ensure the crews of both lost orbitals are memorialized together on the same mountain massif.
