Quandary Peak East Ridge Start Time

Post by cortezi09 »

My fiancé and I are flying in from WI and plan on climbing Quandary peak east ridge on 06/12. Due to other plans we have to be back at the car by 10am. What time would everyone recommend we start by? I was thinking of being on the trail by 4am. Would that be enough time? Roughly how long does it take to get up vs go down. Trying to get an idea of when to decide call it quits and head back if we’ve done past a certain time limit, knowing we must be back at the car by 10am.

I would consider us both as being in great shape, and we have done Mount Bierstadt before. But we’re also from WI and not used to the high elevation. We will have micro spikes, poles, and gaiters to help. Snowshoes will not fit in our carry on bags. With the hike being on 06/12 I anticipate we will post hole along the way and I’m concerned this could really slow us down. Any feedback, suggestions, tips would be greatly appreciated.

It depends, what was your roundtrip time on Bierstadt? and did you climb that also right after coming in from ~sea level? If you're ok with attitude and very fit you definitely could be back to the car before 10am starting at 4am (read post on the trail runner who did the Grand Teton, roundtrip in <3hrs); but then again there are some folks especially if not faring well with the elevation, may struggle to get the summit by then. Also depends on where you park given the TH crowds and parking issues.
