Kilpacker Basin

Post by CUaaron25 »

Hi 14ers forum! Anybody been up to Kilpacker basin recently? Is the road drivable close to the trailhead? Has anybody out there done the Mt. Wilson SW Slopes, route 31.3 in Roach's book, in the past few days or have a report that might have similar conditions to this time of year? Thanks in advance!!! :D

Don't know for sure, but I think that road to kilpacker is plowed. I've seen UPS trucks bonzaing up and down it and it is used to serve some very high end lodges in Dunton which is a few miles from the trailhead to both Kilpacker and Navajo. I think it is actually called thE Dunton Road.

It may be accessible from the Dunton end which is less steep than the other approach. I have also noted plow wands at some dangerous areas on the Telluride end which leads me to believe it may be maintained.

Just a guess.

2010-05-11 Tried to get to Kilpacker Basin TH off of hwy. 145 via Lizard Head pass. Lots of snow in the trees. Stuck for 3-1/2 hrs. Lots of shoveling!!!!

This was the last post on the trailhead conditions for Kilpacker. Apparently I guessed wrong about the maintenance from the Telluride side. On the other hand, Dunton has to maintain access for their business to work so that part of the road must be open. Dunton is about 2 miles from the Kilpacker TH.

You could call them and ask if their road is open.
