Sawtooth Conditions
I can't find any info on the Sawtooth on the Evans - Bierstadt ridge. Has anyone been up there recently? I imagine the ledges leading up to the west side of the Sawtooth would be the crux right now if there is snow left on the route.
Does anyone have any pics from Bierstadt? I just saw one from Evans, and it looks like there is some snow left. I imagine some fell up there earlier this week too - anyone know how much?
Thanks,
Matt

Re: Sawtooth Conditions
I'm heading up to Evans on Sunday, I could let you know when I get back. I'm not sure if you needed the info before this weekend though.

Re: Sawtooth Conditions
Yeah, I was thinking about heading up this weekend. So dont' worry about it for my sake. I'm sure some others would be interested in a pic or two, though.
Thanks

Re: Sawtooth Conditions
Sorry but I think we're heading over towards Sherman it looks like. I heard Guenella pass is fine though (remembver it is closed in Georgetown though, you have to come from the south.), and I spoke to a friend who said she walked through solid sno from bottom to top on Evans last week, but thats just second hand info so I can't promise. Sorry!

Re: Sawtooth Conditions
I'm trying to post a pic taken today, 5/22 of the sawtooth. But I seem to be having a problem with it. Anyway, I attempted bierdstadt, but the high wind turned me around about half way up. I hope it works this time becouse I'm running out of time...and patience

Re: Sawtooth Conditions
sweet it worked... you can see the snow in the middle of the ledges. I hope this helps.

Re: Sawtooth Conditions
Awesome, thanks for the help. We're headed up Evans for sure (well, trying at least) and might poke around on the sawtooth. I'll post some pictures if we get any good ones.

Re: Sawtooth Conditions
What are the conditions like on Evans and/or Bierstadt? I'm trying to find a route with no snow. Trying to avoid snow boots and crampons.

Re: Sawtooth Conditions
I went up Bierstadt today (5/27). I wore trail runners. You don't need snowshoes, microspikes, or anything else really. (The trail runners did get wet, obviously, as I descended). Just make sure you come in from Grant (the south side) since that is the only feasible access to the trailhead right now.
And, as I was looking from Bierstadt, most of the snow has melted off the Sawtooth. It's definitely doable; snow won't be a problem.

Re: Sawtooth Conditions
Snow usually isn't such a big deal on the ledgy portion of the Sawtooth, but there is typically a tongue of snow on the northeast side of Bierstadt (out of sight in the above pics) where you begin the descent to the Sawtooth traverse. I once had a very dicey descent of this slope in late June so I would definitely expect snow right now. It isn't too steep but a fall would be hard to arrest without an ice ax.
