Princeton/Yale conditions this weekend?

Post by kcwins »

Hello! Me and some friends are planning to do some 14ers for memorial day weekend. A few of us are pretty experienced winter hikers, but for others in our group it will be their first 14er. (Everyone is pretty athletic and we are coming from Denver so altitude + training is good, I am more so just curious about conditions + gear).

We have been reading some reports about Princeton recently, but was also wondering if anyone had any insight about doing Yale this time of the yr? Like is having microspikes + trekking poles enough to do these mountains or are snowshoes recommended? Is post holing a huge concern for either of these mtns or are we fine if we start early enough?

Any insight is appreciated, thanks!

Personally, I wouldn't climb these without snowshoes in my pack. I haven't been in that area recently, but typically this time of year you will encounter post-holing on your descent if not earlier. Regardless, I'd try to start as early as possible to maximize your chances of reaching the summit. If someone has put in a nice trench ahead of you then that helps a lot, but that's nothing you can count on.

What about big Sherm? As of last weekend (may have gotten new snow?) It was clear to the Summer TH. I only descended that trail but it's doable in micro spikes and probably a trekking pole. Most people were carrying snow shoes but nobody was wearing them. I assume the ridge is still got some good snow on it and it would be a very manageable and awesome experience for a first 14r if you are fit. It's also pretty short.
I agree it's smart to carry snow shoes, but if you're fast and light and early, I think it's a good bet.
