Where to hike in Tenmile / Mosquito Range

Post by Buckie06 »

Hello all,
I'm looking for suggestions on where to hike this weekend that will be protected from the strong west winds. I'm from Colorado Springs so somewhere in the Mosquito/Tenmile range is good. I'd like something that gets above treeline and is 3,00-4,000 vert. Typically I would do Quandary, but I think the winds will be very rough up there this Sunday. Anyone have suggestions of something that is a bit more wind protected? It doesn't have to be a peak summit, I just want to get out at altitude.

thanks!

Pick 2 of the following (applies to any season):
>Mosquito/Tenmile Range
>Above treeline
>Not windy

Kidding aside, you could try for something in Lost Creek Wilderness which would put you below the trees for longer. Bison Peak is a fun trek in the winter I have heard!

Peak 1 should be packed down at least as far as the Victoria junction with Mt Royal.
Helen is decent. Should be supportable or wind stripped once you get past the first couple hundred feet near the gully.
You could go up to Crystal Lakes and scramble up Father Dyers east ridge.
And Quandary.

I don't live in Summit anymore but I assume it's full on winter up high. You can easily get big vertical on skis right now but it might be a real slog with snowshoes in unconsolidated, faceted snow.
Traveling light is the only way to fly.
