Ice axe restoration

Post by nyker »

I was lucky enough to find a vintage Charlet Moser Wood handled ice axe and I want to restore it. The metal parts especially the blade were pretty rusty.
Got the rust off but the plating is gone underneath most of the rust.

Has anyone restored one of these older axes and have recommendations for where I can get this coated with a similar coating as original?
Assume its not the same chrome as would go on replating a bumper or trim work on an old car, that seems too shiny than what was on the axe originally.

How much money are you willing to spend? Is it a for-fun project for the pride of it or are you trying to avoid buying a new one. It wouldnt' be worth the latter.
You'll have to find a plating house willing to do one off projects. This might be difficult as there is too much overhead for a company to do this. You might find a small time, one employee thing. No one starts up a plating company due to the EPA requirements.
I've got some more information and will pm you.

An eternity of thought, of life, of death, wife, and home concentrated on my mind in those two seconds. Fortunately for me, I threw my right arm around a projecting boulder which stood above the icy plain some two or three feet." Rev. Elijah Lamb

Thanks Rollie. Yea, I won't be planning to actually use this to replace my modern axes. I would imagine that would be extremely cost-ineffective.

Are you able to post a picture? Curious about the condition.
