FYI...
Bakerville, Colo. (Aug. 22, 2023) – Travel delays are anticipated on the road to Grizzly Mine, Stevens Gulch Road (FSR 189.1), from its junction with Interstate 70 at Exit 221. Beginning at daybreak on Aug. 25, 2023, crews will walk in large construction equipment for work on a mine reclamation project. This road is the main access to the popular Grays Peak Trailhead. Before reaching the trailhead, crews will continue up Grizzly Gulch Road (FSR 189.1H) to the site.
The equipment is large and slow moving and will require the entire width of the road. It will be difficult for motorized vehicles to pass the equipment on both Stevens and Grizzly Gulch roads, which are unimproved dirt roads requiring high-clearance vehicles.
The excavator, loader, skid loader and dump truck are needed for a mine reclamation project that will address elevated levels of metals in mine waste rock piles at the San Juan level of the Grizzly Mine site. These mine waste rock piles are actively impacting Grizzly Gulch, which joins Stevens Gulch to form Quayle Creek, a tributary that flows into Clear Creek at Bakerville.
The U.S. Forest Service’s Abandoned Mine Lands Program and Trout Unlimited are partnering to address these hazardous mine wastes from entering the stream channel. This project is being completed through the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA).
The road will remain open while the project is underway. Work will last through the end of September 2023, weather dependent, and then traffic delays will be anticipated again while the equipment is walked out of the area.
