Camping at Winfield

Post by Colorado dreaming »

I am wanting to tow my small camper (19 foot hybrid) with my 4Runner to Winfield and camp there.

First, I have read TH posts about 390 getting more potholes in last few years, particularly the second half of the road. Has anyone tried taking a camper down this road in last few years? If taking it slow, will it be a problem? Or should I try to stop and camp not as far on 390, say near TH for Sheep Gulch, Belford or Missouri?

Second, how full has Winfield been getting on weekends this summer? Will finding a spot for the camper be a problem?

Thanks!

Finding a spot for the camper back there will not be a problem. The road is very decent up until missouri gulch th with a few rough spots but , totally fine if you go SLOW. Another rough spot or two on the way to winfield but pretty much the same. Regular clearance 2wd is fine. The road is pretty long but not too rocky or rut filled. Up to your comfort level, and driving skills with a camper. There are multiple spots to camp before missouri gulch th . Good luck

You will want to avoid the weekend of the Leadville 100.

Majority of the sites were taken by 6pm on Friday 7/7 when I was last there, including the more established ones along the road before Winfield. Some good options if you get there before 3pm.
