Does anyone carry an anemometer for wind speed readings?

Post by mountainman16 »

Curious if anyone takes an anemometer with them to measure wind speeds. I feel like the wind speed estimates I make or others tell me are often inaccurate or exaggerated without a dedicated device. Any product recommendations?

Why? Might as well carry a sextant while you're at it.
- I didn't say it was your fault. I said I was blaming you.

I use a simple decision tree:

1. Is it windy as f*ck?
a. Yes -> it is windy as f*ck
b. No -> it isn't that windy
Make wilderness less accessible.

No need to carry any wind measuring equipment. All you need to do is take the higher forecast from NOAA and mountain-forecast, and add 20mph. This is the number you should be telling friends and family for the wind you endured during your hike.

Example:

NOAA says winds of 20mph on Mount Massive with gusts up to 40mph. When you finish the hike tell everyone you hiked in 60mph winds. Works every time!

I have a Kestrel 3500 Weather Meter because I'm a weather nerd. It's pretty cool, but usually stays in the car. If you are looking for wind speed only, I don't think the weather meters are worth it. But if you like to geek out, it's a fun instrument.

I do believe I've noted a person or two on here who sometimes carry a handheld unit - I briefly considered getting one just for fun before deciding I already carry way too much weight as is.

Instead, if I actually care about a semi-accurate number I just look for the nearest recorded wind speed for that date and time at the CAIC website https://avalanche.state.co.us/observati ... r-stations

Hahaha, love the reply’s. I always wondered the same about how close my predictions were to the real thing so I got the Kestrel 2500. It also does temp, wind chill and altitude so it’s a good all around device. It’s small and only weighs 3.5oz so I just leave it in my pack and bust it out when I need it.

Yes.

Wind speed
Gust
Average wind speed
Temp
Wind chill

They use barometric pressure to calculate altitude.

I enjoy using it most in Winter conditions.

I used to use one that hung around the neck, I think a Sper Scientific, but that was back in college days.

When will this be inside a smartphone or smartwatch?
