5/21 best chance of success for summit

Post by weh »

I've never done a 14er in May, or June for that matter. I have about 20 under my belt. With crampons or crampons and snow shoes and a healthy concern for safety, what 14er would gives me the best chance of success to summit on Frday? I'm thinking Sherman, Quandry or Grays. One reason, these mountains are likely to have others on the trail. Thanks for your feedback.

The only problem is that thosee mountains have received a lot of new snow over the past couple weeks (more northern front range stuff). I am opting to climb Yale the 21st if you are interested you can climb with me. A nice TR was posted for yale from sunday and it seems very do-able.

For what it's worth, I have done Bierstadt on my b/day every year for the past 30 years. And my b/day is the 21st... Some years are better than others and I have a feeling this year will be a little tougher than most. But many are doable - Quandry probably being your safest bet. Be prepared for mush on the way down. Good luck!

Anything with traffic should have a trail packed in depending on how this storm affects things. As long as you follow an avy safe route you should also be fine. I was in steep terrain Sunday and this morning (RMNP) and stability overall has been pretty good but definitely still need to be able to evaluate yourself if you're going up the steeps. There is some funky snow out there.

Quandary will almost certainly be safe and very likely to have a packed trail via the east ridge but it's not your only option. If you go early, you'll avoid postholing quite a bit in most locations.

No I would love it. I am always solo, company would be great.

If you are for sure going, send me a pm with some contact info and lets set something up.

Sorry not trying to jack the thread, back on topic.

Thanks for the responses! Will keep an eye on the snow cums. Probably will give Yale a try.

Sounds like there might be a couple of use hiking. I am 100 % going, not sure about the others.

When it gets closer let me know if you are heading up.

If you do the standard route on Quandary, you won't need crampons. Bring the snowshoes.

I am planning to hike on Friday (5/28) as well. I was thinking Gray's (Torreys) or Grizzly. I am hoping to start hiking at 7am. I am open...
