Trinchera Peak to Teddy's Peak question

Post by huffy13 »

I'm heading up to Blue Lakes CG for 1 night and my plan is to summit Trinchera and then head north over to Teddy's Peak, drop down the trail to Bear Lakes CG and back to Blue Lakes. My question is about the ridge from Trinchera to Teddy's, is it pretty straightforward and easy? On google maps and topographical images it looks pretty easy, but I don't want to bank on that alone. I figured someone on here has traversed that ridge and could share some info. There is a couple of TRs that cover the traverse including PT 12955, but I didn't find one that continues on north from there. My original plan was to head south from Trinchera and get the Leaning Peaks, but I'm a little skeptical that the weather, along with my slower pace, will allow my enough time to be able to get back down before storms could be firing up.
Seems like the times that I need a mountain the most are the times that I can not get to them.

I did a short portion of that ridge in 2021. I didn't go much further than 12955. It was mostly rolling tundra/talus without a lot of technical difficulty. Teddy's Peak is actually kind of far (~4 miles one way), and the talus sections can be slow going. I don't think there is a defined trail going down from Teddys to the lakes, especially after the wind storm a few years ago. There's an Alltrails review from yesterday saying the route is impassible due to deadfall. There's also one ascent on Peakbagger.com showing two ways to access the ridge, but they're more than likely bushwhacks.

In the next couple of weeks I actually plan on traversing the whole ridge (public land only), from Mt Maxwell to treeline north of Napoleon Peak. I'm hoping to do it in two days in two separate trips, and I'll be bushwhacking from the Indian Creek trail to the ridge just north of Napoleon Peak (if I can). I'd be very interested to see how your hike goes. I'll attach some pictures from my trip in 2021. Hopefully this gives you an idea of what terrain to expect:

That info does help. I am going to end up holding off on this trip anyway due to the chances of storms on Monday going from 40% in the forecast to sitting at 98% now. I don't want to make that drive unless I know I'm going to be able to make at least one peak. I'll look at late July or sometime in August, and even if that doesn't work out I'll be heading to Guanella Pass in September for a day to hike some 13ers there.
