2 lost pack llamas

Post by l_balcomb »

HELP! Please be on the look out for 2 pack llamas in the Uncompahgre Wilderness, Lost at the top of East Fork Cimarron trail on 7/27. We were jumped by a sheep guard Dog. Please look for them if you are climbing Uncompahgre, Matterhorn or Wetterhorn. They are fully packed and are dragging their lead ropes. They may get their loads off so please report if you fine camp gear also. Thanks

That's wild, I'm sorry to hear about this it sounds like a terrible situation.

Was the dog off-leash by chance?

no dog was by my side on leash. we have alot of experience with managing sheep herds but this was very different. Very very fast and aggressive. I was right in the middle of it and super wanted to save my dog. He was wearing his dog pack and I think that helped a lot. He's OK.

The sheep dog would probably have to be off leash to perform his duties.

Oh I gotcha, I thought you were saying it was someone else's dog. Huge bummer regardless

I am heading that way tomorrow. What should I do if I see them? Approach, secure, try to lead back or just note position and post about it here? Some better way to contact you?

Hope for a good outcome.

Will be in the middle Cimarron next weekend and will keep an eye out. Comfortable with wildlife and will wrangle them in if spotted.

westzl, If you see them approach slowly with your hands down. try to get close enough to step on there lead rope, once you have the lead they will be cooperative. If you catch one the other may follow. Don't try to chase them that'll just drive them off. the coordinates would be great and any info on their condition. You can secure them if you'll be out in a day to send coordinates. they may be hung up by the panniers or the lead ropes, if so try your best to free them. also if you come to a bunch of camping gear please send those coordinates also. any info may help. call me 970-876-2051

You could contact the Durango Herald. They've run stories on this type of thing before.

I've done one trip with with llamas, it was a blast.

Good luck.

Well, I was all over Wetterhorn basin today, ate lunch at the Middle Canyon trail intersection. Kept a close eye out because I knew these animals were out there, but I saw no trace of llama and no abandoned camp gear.

I did see this, maybe they can help:
