way too much variation in terrain, etc. to make this stat (ft/hr) useful. And mileage is just as important as elevation gain when estimating time for a hike.
I have used my historical hike data to come up with a formula using mileage and elevation gain to estimate duration. It's pretty darn accurate (for me). I can add modifiers for things like good trail, easy tundra, short hike, tons of talus, long ridge runs, bushwhacking, snow climbs, technical climbs, etc.
I think you just illustrated how the stats ARE useful.
Whiley likes to start at 10-11am
I like to start at 6-7am
Whiley begrudgingly rolls out of bed early for my slow ass and we start at 6-7 regardless of the objective and we often finish in the dark because big days r kewl and if we have a short day that means we go do more and/or can drink chocolate milk sooner because chocolate milk r kewl
Start before 6-7 if you prefer being in the dark in the morning instead of in the evening
You can all use my formula, it applies far and wide, you too can use it to stand on top of a rock(s). You're welcome, saved you all like umpteen pages of what reads like AI and is just as useful even as a snarkass reply (with the exception of long days and chocolate milk being cool, because those are facts).

I'd argue that DATA are useful (for my purposes). I'll concede that stats are probably pretty damn useful for an athlete for training and performance tracking. I am no athlete

I always stop for a chocolate milkshake in Montrose, does that count?
