Edit: Adding an edit to my post to echo what others have said here (or maybe just beating a dead horse). There are a lot of truly impressive athletes in this community (e.g. Chris Fisher, Andrew and Andrea, Justin Simoni, etc.) that I follow and hold in high esteem. Aside from their athletic achievements, the humility they display and the support they show for those who share the sport with them earns deep respect from me. Reading Andrew Hamilton's trip reports as he climbed with Chris (who was in the process of breaking Andrew's own record) was one of the coolest things I've seen on here to date. Regardless of how many peaks you can climb or how fast you can do it, if you are dishonest, lack character, or just generally act like a giant turd, it completely tarnishes any accomplishment for me. For whatever that's worth.

Erin’s physical capability has always been undeniable, and certainly that is evidenced in this endeavor. I think we all agree on that. I think we probably also agree that, as with so many other things in life, HOW one gets from point A to point B matters just as much (if not more?) as what the endeavor itself entails. Unfortunately for her, the athletic accomplishment is fleeting in the grand scheme of life and time without the backing of integrity, honesty, humility – and community and the respect thereof. She will have her 15 minutes of fame thanks to her carefully curated version of events, but it’s only momentary glory, not legacy.

She’s worthy of all the scrutiny of what she did or didn’t do and whether it’s a valid FKT (which it’s not). It’s no different than the scrutiny any “mainstream” athlete would be under if their integrity were in question, so I’m glad the physical feat doesn’t overshadow the facts. Though, honestly, more appalling to me than her misrepresentation of what she did is how she is toward others. Her attitude, ego, entitlement, and sheer thoughtlessness toward community (here and at large) is truly dumbfounding to me. Clearly, she’s also forgotten she wasn’t always an elite athlete. The good news for us is our lives go on unbothered regardless of what she does or doesn’t do, but SHE has to live with the side effects and detriment of constantly short-changing herself.

Since this was a women-specific record attempt, I will also say it’s disappointing that she’s of a character that can’t be championed by other women. What she’s role-modeling is sour. Women deserve good representatives in this community, and she’s not one of them. So, this has been disappointing on all fronts.

I was passed by her once on Mount Morrison, and she didn’t say “passing” or “behind you”, it startled me and I literally jumped off the trail because by the time I was aware of her she was like 3ft behind me already.

The self supported 14er ABC FKT is a huge accomplishment, something I’ll never come close to doing. I’m a different style of hiker anyway, and I can only run the downhills. Certainly a lifetime achievement, but criticism (although laid on thickly in here) seems to also be valid. I won’t comment on anything else in this thread, this thread is crowded as it is.

I was passed by her twice in the past month -- once on Holy Cross and once in the Chicago Basin. Both times, I was aware of my surroundings, and it was normal?

I never know how/when to alert people in front of me to my presence. It's always awkward. I usually just try to make noise/make my presence known and hope they step aside, but often times, less serious (experienced? not sure how to phrase this) hikers and/or certain kinds of young men (trying to phrase this neutrally) won't know to do so, which increases the awkwardness.

As for speculation, I think it goes both ways I can only speak from the experiences I've had as a woman on (and off) trail.

I just say, “Coming up behind you.” Usually works.

A lot of dbags hike with stereos now. They almost never hear me. Same with folks with headphones. Or those having a convo. But almost everyone scoots over once they realize you’re there.

Running into this person twice in one month--in very distant parts of CO implies those encounters may not be random.

i understand and have experienced the effect meltedavocado is describing in the way men treat women, but I think a response like Erin's, denigrating other male hikers, is very misguided and irresponsible, especially for someone setting "precedence" for women.
