Great thread so far! Bookmarking this for future ideas.
Phish isn't depressing - it's awful. I can't even believe that people continue to refer to their noise as "music"...

As far as Floyd - life affirming might be a bit of a stretch - I just like pretty much all of it. Besides - who can't listen to "The Gnome" and not feel like getting up and dancing a jig?

But the snowboarding thing - that goes a long ways to explaining things...

Ditto. I tried, really, even seeing the Division Bell tour, but their music just makes me feel shitty.
Interesting... I've been listening to Floyd for 30-ish years (came to it late) and it has never depressed nor made me feel shitty.

Maybe I'm just not paying attention.

I like Pink Floyd too, I had to stop listening to them for the same reason. The Wall just depressed me. One of my friends borrowed it and I never got it back. Oh well, I didn't ask for him to return it!

I don't have five bands but I do have five DJs. Well, maybe three. Make that one I've flown across oceans to see and a couple back when I was younger I might go see if they were in town.

The true voice of the Colorado mountains is Bill Fries. He (still) lives in Ouray.

Haha SOD, classic. Right up there with GG Allen, and Dayglo Abortions as the most offensive punk/thrash bands of all time! Of course none of them could hold a torch to The Meatmen with such fine song titles as: "Orgy of One", "Mr. Tapeworm" "Crippled Children Suck", "Tescos Tender Love Ballad", and "I Sin for a Living" you knew you were for a wild ride... The craziest part is that in the early days, the singer, Tesco Vee, was a public school teacher by day and punk rocker by night!

Personally I never really got into the industrial bands like Skinny Puppy, Ministry, etc. The sampling and metal overdubs never really did much for me, and their lyrics, while sometimes provocative, were usually just boring and repetitive. That being said, the founder of Ministry, Al Jourgensen (who grew up in Breckenridge), is an interesting guy and I met him once in the early 90's when he was hanging out at Wax Trax records in the Capitol hill neighborhood of Denver.

In no particular order:

Led Zeppelin
Allman Brothers Band
Nirvana
Tool
The Black Keys

Beethoven
Johnny Winter
Eric Clapton
Jimi Hendrix
Gary Clark Jr

Saw The Planets performed by CSO at Red Rocks last year. One of the best live performances I've seen so far.
