Re: 2021 Centennials Speed Record Attempt
Hey guys just finished Culebra and red. Man there actually was a lot of snow up there. Really treacherous footing. So yeah we are definitely sticking with gentler peaks for now. Phoenix through Stewart this evening finishing early next morning, then heading north to the good old sawatch
For some easier peaks while there there is so much moisture.
I’m not feeling so hot…massive headache right now! And I’m nervous as the next route is on a ridge for miles and miles and if it is covered in fresh snow that’s going to be slick!
At least up high it was snowing and not raining. Don’t really want to get drenched up there…

I'll be watching (and keeping a spreadsheet) but will be in NV and NY over the next few weeks climbing some veritable molehills so I won't be able to get out to say hello.
Best of luck to you and your team!

Re: 2021 Centennials Speed Record Attempt
Good news! If this is correct, there should be minimal snow near Phoenix, San Luis, and Stewart.

Day 1: Not bad...
5 peaks (Culebra, Red, Phoenix, San Luis, Stewart)
On foot: 19.3 hrs, 28.7 miles, 13,717' gain, -12,762' loss; 1.49 mph avg pace
Ascending to summits: 14.0 hrs, 19.5 miles, 12,710' gain, -5,899' loss; 1.40 mph avg pace
Descending to THs: 5.3 hrs, 9.2 miles, 1,007' gain, -6,863' loss; 1.74 mph avg pace
Transitions: 4.7 hrs, 129 miles
It looks like he's getting some sleep at Nutras Creek TH. I'm hoping the weather improves today.
The times are based on Andrew's Garmin. To estimate foot distances and gain/loss, I'm using caltopo.com. For traverses between peaks, I'm counting them as ascents to summits for the stats above.

Correction, he's on the move again so the transition mileage is a bit understated. Not sure where they're headed next...

Culebra Red Phoenix San Luis Stewart
Culebra started in the rain which made for great photos, but the snow up high made for some treacherous class two rock hopping. We met some really awesome people today who were super supportive and encouraging to Andrew.
He was a bit stressed coming off the Culebra & Red as he had a massive headache, and was intimidated by being on such a long ridge through the night coming up not knowing how the weather was going to play out.
When we met up with Vince in Creede the skies had cleared and Andrews spirit was lifted, NO RAIN! He decided on no big puffy for this leg (hindsight- horrible decision) and as he started up Phoenix with Vince, I focused on crew stuff- organizing drying gear and organizing- until the rain came in.
After the horrendous long drive in rain and hail to Nutras Creek TH, the worry set in! Andrews fears came to life, treacherous winter conditions, white out, and he was frozen. So much postholing. He felt worse than his 14er winter record as he didn’t have his appropriate winter gear.
All I could do was wait for him to arrive. Expected ETA 4 am.
Finally time of arrival- 5:10am

So the plan is shav/tab and Antero. Vince and I will pick him up at Baldwin gulch, then I’ll head up Princeton with him. We are in touch with Chris Tomer for weather which we still have to determine the rest of the night. But that’s the plan so far

Re: 2021 Centennials Speed Record Attempt
One crazy thing about this data is that Andrew apparently descends MUCH faster than he ascends. My experience as a mortal is that I don't descend a whole lot faster than I ascend. Part of that is I am not usually in a hurry once I summit, and part is that I am fatigued from the climb (again, being mortal). So I am usually faster descending but not a lot, maybe 1.5 times faster, not 3 times faster.glenmiz wrote: ↑Mon Jun 28, 2021 6:26 am Day 1: Not bad...![]()

I wonder if that was true during his 14ers speed record as well?
