Re: Mountain goats, really harmless?
Was up on Kit Carson just past the Bear's Playground and came across a dude with a rifle in Camo hiding in the rocks. Told me he was hunting goats and asked if I had seen any where I came from (South Colony). I told him "no offense man, but I'm on the goat's side on this one."

Re: Mountain goats, really harmless?
I was false charged (twice) by one on the S. Arapaho/Old Baldy saddle a couple years ago, a large, solitary mangy and old-looking one. I left my pack at the saddle to do Old Baldy (don't do this anymore for a number of reasons) and as I ascended I watched him approach it, examine it obsessively for a while, then begin to stalk me to the top. He met me on the summit, moving very quickly to get up there, then led me back down (keeping some distance) and when I tried to get my pack back he'd apparently decided it was his now. Ran at me with his head down twice stopping around 10 feet away. He had also been licking up all the sodium on my pack (helmet interior/shoulder straps) I backed away slowly and gave him some space for a while, and he eventually left. I've also walked near a few big groups with kids that either didn't care I was there or came near me to check me out. But the rare aggressive one could potentially end badly!

Re: Mountain goats, really harmless?
Pyramid goats tried to kill my partner and I a few years ago by kicking rocks from above on some of the steep bits below the summit. Just thinking about the sight of those toaster sized rocks hurdling feet from my face at near terminal velocity still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. But they missed us so it's all good I guess.

Where ever you are... There you are.

Rifle goat season appears to start September 5 in district S9 which probably contains Kit Carson. Archery begins Aug 1.Sluglas wrote: ↑Wed Aug 23, 2023 3:07 pm Was up on Kit Carson just past the Bear's Playground and came across a dude with a rifle in Camo hiding in the rocks. Some hikers were saddened when they saw a goat shot near Quandary a few years back. It is illegal to leave any remains in the field.

Freedom from being harassed by goats doesn't come free (*). There are people out there tasked with keeping them in check 24/7. They are known as The Men Who Stare at Goats.

I’ve been hiking that section of the Sangres for nearly a decade and have yet to see any sign of a mountain goat anywhere in that part of the range. Poacher or not, that dude went home empty-handed.peter303 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 23, 2023 5:19 pmRifle goat season appears to start September 5 in district S9 which probably contains Kit Carson. Having lived in Southern Colorado the whole time I’ve been out here, mountain goats still feel like a rare treat for me.

Re: Mountain goats, really harmless?
In CO, I haven't had any aggressive encounters with mountain goats (Elk yes, goats no), but had in Montana where the goats seemed more aggressive less willing to veer off trails when you meet them.
Mt Evans probably had the most friendly ones and then the resident goats on Pyramid. I was more afraid of them starting a rock slide above me or on rocks I was on. In Chicago Basin they were in search of pee...

Sorry, wasn't clear. This was years ago, more than 20.peter303 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 23, 2023 5:19 pmRifle goat season appears to start September 5 in district S9 which probably contains Kit Carson. you're looking at sheep units and dates. there isn't currently a goat season in the sangres. probably was 20+ years ago, i dunno.peter303 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 23, 2023 5:19 pm Rifle goat season appears to start September 5 in district S9 which probably contains Kit Carson. Archery begins Aug 1.

with goats being non native, competitive with native sheep for habitat, and are potential disease vectors there are plenty of places cpw doesn't exactly want them. there are a lot of sheep in the sangres. if they did start popping up in the sangres in appreciable numbers my guess is cpw would go ahead with opening a season and issue enough tags to try and remove all or most of them as maintaining a healthy sheep herd would be the priority.

Goats and dogs are not a good mix, as already mentioned. Here's more evidence from Utah... https://www.ksl.com/article/50715054/mo ... timpanogos
