September is the driest month along parts of the Front Range, but it is the wettest month in parts of the San Juans.

It depends on which part of Colorado you are headed to. Also, there can be some big snowstorms then.

September is still a good month to climb, but keep an eye on the weather and go prepared (which is applicable in all months).

I second that.

September of 2014 was my best month as I bagged three 14ers. Last September had a lousy weather and I managed to summit only one 14er. Since I am 75, I need 12 hours of sunny and dry weather.

All or part of the San Juans? I'm looking at mid-September - want to stay in the Salida area, hit the 1/2 marathon in Buena Vista mid-Sept and some Sawatch peaks and Uncompahgre and Sneffels.

All or part of the San Juans?
In all of the San Juans, September is usually one of wetter months. In much of the San Juans, it is the wettest month of all.

However, that doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of nice days in September. It's still usually a nice month to climb. You just have to go prepared for the weather, just like anywhere or any time in Colorado.

In Colorado at least, there usually aren't any times of year when the weather is consistently bad.

I looked up the climate for Silverton and August and September are the 2 wettest months with 3.27" and 3.23" respectively. I checked Buena Vista for comparison. August is the wettest at 2.01" and Sept. is .98". We go to the San Juans in late Sept. most every year and have almost always had great weather. The possibility for early snow is always there but these episodes are generally followed by brilliant weather.
