Anyone have opinions about sleeping in an FJ Cruiser? After my Forester bites the dust I will either upgrade to a 4Runner or a Cruiser, but am curious how roomy the sleeping arrangements will be in the latter.

As to the OP's question, the Forester is great to sleep in. Quite similar to the Outback, which I have also taken a night's rest in. But while the Outback is longer, it also has a shorter roof. The Forester has a little less length (I'm 5'9 and with pushing the seats forward it isn't a problem) and a higher roof - more useful for not bonking your head while getting dressed.

One thing to be aware of, however, is that the newer Foresters (starting about 2014, I think?) no longer have completely flat-folding passenger seats, like they used to be. Instead, for reasons I can't comprehend given the model's target customer base, there is now a small bump or step at the point where the seats fold. It's not huge, but definitely enough to feel it unless you have a lot of cushioning, or use some kind of spacer to level out the bed. But hey, at least the fuel efficiency got way better.

Dakota, 6.5' bed + blow-up mattress. It's as comfy as and bigger than my bedroom.

Also cleaner.

And gets more action. MUCH more. :-s

I had an 07 FJ and one of the reasons I got rid of it was due to not being able to sleep in it. That model year, the back seats would not lay flat. I'm not sure it the latter ones do however. I still would opt for a 4Runner regardless.

I've slept in the driver's seat of an '08 Scion XD and an '06 and '08 Honda Civic. The front seats go down almost flat so all I had to do was fill in the wheel well most of the way, throw a sleeping bag over myself and pass out. I did this last summer with a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage (subcompact) because I had to fly to Colorado rather than drive and it worked the same way, although the performance of the vehicle was terrible at altitude (anywhere west of Denver). Being ex Army infantry means I can sleep just about anywhere as long as I am warm and semi flat. A Dodge Avenger I rented in Seattle was roomier but the seats didn't go flat so I had to find a slope to park on so I could get the angle right. I absolutely agree with the person who mentions turning the car on before getting out of the sleeping bag. I have done this more times than I can list.

Slept in my 2016 4runner at a trailhead last night. Fit a memory foam pad and layered some blankets. Wasn't too bad

I'm 5'10", and I need to sleep diagonal to really fit properly- anyone have tips on fitting in there somewhat comfortably, or any hacks on getting a decent night's sleep? I'm talking about little modifications or cheap foam pads and such that can make a difference.
Pretty sure that's what Brendan Leonard (semi-rad.com) slept in for quite some time roaming around the west (or maybe an Outback Sport). I have no idea how though, those things are tiny!

I just traded in my 2002 Subaru Outback Sport last month for a 2016 Grand Cherokee. The Subee made it to all my trailheads with no problem and it was nice knowing that it had that skid plate underneath. Sleeping in it really wasn't an option though, even with the back seats down (I'm 5'10"). Although I dropped the back seat on the GC last weekend and that's going to be a little tight too. I think I may need to cut a piece of plywood to my height and have it hang into the backseat leg space (if that makes any sense). Still a better setup than the Sport.

I have a 2011 Kia Sorento with a massive 4 cylinder 2.4 liter engine and it is 6 speed manual. No 3rd row seat. I've driven this thing back and forth to Colorado and Arizona from Indiana several times and my wife and I have camped in it several times. The back seats fold down, and I'm 5'9" and can lay down comfortably in the back. Plus it gets great gas mileage.

But- it ain't got enough ponies. On steep inclines I have to down shift to 4th gear in the mountains. The wheel clearance is great and the approach and exit angles are very good. It got up to the Summer TH at Grays with no problem.
So I have been happy with it and it's functionality for my purposes. Plus the standard 60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty is hard to beat if you want to drive worry free. The 2016 versions have a much lower wheel clearance.

And I have rented several vehicles as well. MY favorite so far was a 2015 Toyota 4Runner. Smooth ride, plenty of power and room on the inside with the seats down. But twice as hard on the wallet as a Sorento.
Try waking up on the right side of the grass- that's a good place to start
Opinions are like A$$Holes- everyone has one, but some stink worse than others. So please, keep your opinion clean.
I work a lot of hours so I don't have to sleep outside and so I can go on vacation and be outside.

I (6 ') have extensively slept in the back of my Crosstrek for a year now. It isn't the most comfortable position but I am a side sleeper and sleeping diagonally with just some bending of legs works fine for me. I have a memory foam pad that I put on the backside space, and push the front seats all the way in the front, then I keep a tall backpack or some other stuff in the leg space between the back seat and the front seat. This just works fine. Heck we even slept for a good 5 hours in the Crosstrek with the three of us, one at the back and two in the front seats. As you can guess, we aren't picky sleepers and can almost sleep anywhere!

I stand a lofty 5'5" and have been comfortably sleeping in the back of my '07 FJ for years, including most of the summer of 2008 when I took a few months off work for hiking and living the dream. If you're taller, it might be a little cramped.
There is a drop off where the seats fold down and the cargo area starts, but a papasan cushion and blankets tucked under it make things flat again. I'm going to upgrade to a piece of memory foam this month, though.
It sleeps one person. The wheel wells constrict the middle such that two people would not be able to sleep unless stacked upon one another.
