Quite impressive how well Dan is moving still at this point, especially after driving himself all the way to the Elks. Now he's got a lot of slow tedious talus ahead to get up the West Side of Snowmass. Already through the choss filled climb through Satan's Ridge (always a delight). Go Dan go.

Re: Self Supported 14er Record Attempt
Dan stopped by the snowmass TH last night and dropped off a dirt bike, he will use that to get back to his van at the capitol TH. So the EBike guess was not far off!
You could pull off this day without a dirt bike, as there is a way up capitol from the snowmass TH, however Dan scouted that route and didn’t like how rugged it was compared to the standard capitol route so he opted for the dirt bike solution.

Is Satan's ridge a standard part of all 14er FKT's? That's one traverse I don't see myself ever doing... (though I am about 1000x more likely to try that ridge than any of the superhuman FKTs people seem to do).thebeave7 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 12, 2022 1:26 pm Quite impressive how well Dan is moving still at this point, especially after driving himself all the way to the Elks. No. He's just crossing over to hit up Snowmass from the west. Looks like this right there, terribletigzy wrote: ↑Tue Jul 12, 2022 3:28 pm Is Satan's ridge a standard part of all 14er FKT's? you have to really appreciate not just the fitness and skill, but the planning and logistics that goes into an effort like this. figuring out the quickest, least physically taxing way to get to 3000' below each summit is equally important to how fast you get the rest of the way to the top.andrewhamilton wrote: ↑Tue Jul 12, 2022 3:28 pm Dan stopped by the snowmass TH last night and dropped off a dirt bike, he will use that to get back to his van at the capitol TH. Really cool route he put down between Capitol and Snowmass. Are there any climbers trails back there from the lakes, crossing over Satans and over the West slopes?justiner wrote: ↑Tue Jul 12, 2022 3:32 pmNo. He's just crossing over to hit up Snowmass from the west. Re: Self Supported 14er Record Attempt
The whole of the Pierre Lakes Basin is chunky talus, so no trails to speak of. You'll be able to pick up something near around Sibera Lake - a social trail with some cairns, to start you off up the west slopes, but then it's just kinda crappy loose stuff to the summit.LetsGoMets wrote: ↑Tue Jul 12, 2022 4:31 pm Really cool route he put down between Capitol and Snowmass. Dan's route between Capital and Snowmass looks almost identical to Andrew's route during his Centennial run, although in the opposite direction.

Re: Self Supported 14er Record Attempt
You know on the positive side i really enjoy the remoteness of the route. Pretty much a guarantee you won’t see any one in Pierre Lakes. But that’s basically 5 hours of rock hopping back there on various types of rock fields-it’s pretty rugged. I imagine Dan will be hurting tonight. But it will be a relief to have those two finished!

Re: Self Supported 14er Record Attempt
After the rock hopping ascent, and the knee pounding descent, he gets to stretch out the quads and calfs on a bike ride back to his van! So yes, it will be a relief to end this unique sufferfest; one that most of us cannot even comprehend. Standing alone, it would be noteworthy. But for him, just another day and marks the end of his first week on this quest.andrewhamilton wrote: ↑Tue Jul 12, 2022 5:03 pmbasically 5 hours of rock hopping back there on various types of rock fields-it’s pretty rugged. I saw the request to borrow a dirt bike on fb, was it for this?
