Kurt Blair missing in NZ accident

Another sobering reminder that even the best, safest, and kindest among us are not immune to the cold indifference of the mountains we love.

I also knew Kurt personally and was fortunate enough to climb Lizard Head with him and one of his sons last year. I had told him I was working on 13ers and he asked if I had done it yet. I said no. “Well, do you want to?!” Just like Geo said, he truly never tired of returning to the same peaks and areas because he just loved being out there. He was a remarkable person and will be deeply missed by so many.

Kurt was my AIARE 1 teacher in late 2022. A true professional, outstanding teacher, and a memorable mountain personality. There are few like him.

He was more than a mountain guide. The more I get to know someone, the more I wished I didn’t. He broke that saying of mine and I’m fortunate to have organically met him and have a genuine friendship. I won’t give up on him until he is found and wish I could be there looking for him. I am so, so sad.

When we were on Coxcomb we got on the subject of people he knew from the forum and your name came up. I don't recall the exact words but he had wonderful things to say about you. I'm so sorry.

I am sad to learn this. I was fortunate enough to join Kurt & Amy on a backpacking trip for Mt. Oso. I am grateful that our paths crossed & I’ll always remember our fun trip.

I was deeply shocked and saddened to learn the news of Kurt's tragic accident. I did a number of guided climbing/mountaineering outings with him in the San Juans. I have worked with various guides in WA, OR, MT, WY, and around CO. He was hands down my favorite guide to work with. He was always pleasant, patient, friendly, and easy to chat with on the trail. He had a sincere desire to teach mountaineering skills and was always open to questions. I am definitely a better person for having known him. My condolences to his family, San Juan Mountain Guides and all the people who were lucky enough to know and work with him. He will be deeply missed.
