I summited Longs on Friday, and one thing struck me on the Homestretch: there had been a single set of tracks leading all the way from the Keyhole, then a second set coming a short way down from the summit.

So it seems that he initially started heading back via the Keyhole, then decided that shortcutting down to Chasm Lake was a quicker/safer option given weather conditions.
