Re: Mexico 13er list!
I tried digging but didn’t turn up much other than “set out on a hike and never returned” and “the cause and manner of death are assumed to be natural”. I’m curious now feel free to add to the story.

Re: Mexico 13er list!
I was the DA in Telluride back then and while I was not a personal friend of Sharon, I did appear in her court on a regular basis. So when she went missing I followed the story closely. The news was not clear, but cause of death never disclosed and access to her body was denied. After a time, the mexican government just sent back ashes, and that was that. The whole thing was more than a little unsettling. You can draw your own conclusion, but to my mind, travel to Mexico is not benign.
I put that post up because I believe travel to Mexico is dangerous.
Go, have fun, but go with eyes open.

Re: Mexico 13er list!
I’m surprised anybody goes to Mexico. The US state department has a stiff advisory against travel to six Mexican states and reconsider travel to seven more. And there is a long list of restrictions for US government employees anywhere in Mexico including no travel after dark and no traveling alone.
Then again, many countries have advisories against travel to the US.

Many countries should warn about traveling to THIS forum cuz of this off topic (from the thread’s original intention) fear fear, oh lordy me, fear. Good lord, don’t we all know Mexico is dangerous in places? You should have seen the state park campground I stayed at a few nights ago in the Midwest. The scary ones were all white. The nicest and most welcoming I met was an African American couple who I’m sorry I didn’t get the names of.JChitwood wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2024 6:05 pm I’m surprised anybody goes to Mexico. Just a suggestion, try not turning so many topics into your narrative, or your personal fear. I tagged onto Chitwoods response here cuz of the warning to American travelers, thus my warning for this forum. Most of the rest is intended for the fearful dude who likes to keep riling up well intended posts. Sheesh already
(I’m not a perfect poster by any means, but good god with the fear and political fear innuendo. I’m trying to drop that crap and have for a while)
Re: Mexico 13er list!
Of the 11 mountains on the list, one is in a state of the second category; none in the first category.
So this is kinda like saying you are surprised that anyone goes to Wisconsin, given how much crime there is in Chicago.
Re: Mexico 13er list!
Tragic story. Also 12 years ago. And what actually happened seems entirely unclear. Hope your decision making in the courtroom followed a different protocol.
(But yes, be careful when you travel to Mexico. Or just be careful period).

Re: Mexico 13er list!
I am a native Michigander and travel back there 1 or two times per year to visit family. Whenever I tell people I am going to Detroit for my vacation I always get the "be sure to pack your bullet proof vest" joke.
Never had an issue, never a consideration for me. When I went to Nepal ~20 years ago there were warnings against the Maoist activities going on at the time. I would be more afraid of my plane crashing or falling off the mountain than being a crime victim.
Interesting what we choose to be afraid of. Starting a fear frenzy about Mexico smells political to me. Be careful of course, like you would anywhere.

Re: Mexico 13er list!
I'm surprised by you Wentzl. Surely you won't let something like a silly governmental travel advisory stop you from exercising your personal liberty to travel to Mexico? I mean, how many people who visit Mexico ACTUALLY die?
Re: Mexico 13er list!
And got two more down of that list!
In terms of danger: Saw a juvenile rattler on each of the two. The one i almost stepped on was at just under 14,000ft. (In perspective: those were also the first two snakes i have ever seen during twelve trips to Mexico).

Re: Mexico 13er list!
In summary:
Some areas of Mexico are pretty safe (more so than Denver) and some are less safe. Use caution and your own judgement when planning trips.
Anyway, I'm at at least nine trips to Mexico. I've had no problems so far other than taxi drivers trying to over charge me. Still anything can happen anywhere (including in the US).

I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

Re: Mexico 13er list!
Not concerned about government warnings. Just relaying my personal experience and observation. Go, have fun:

Re: Mexico 13er list!
So far, i haven't seen any personal experience relayed. Just observations. Two. And those were 12 years apart. And both more than a 1000 mile drive to the closest 13er.
What's the courtroom term for that? Conjecture? (I know that online it is called "doing your own research").
