Loveland Pass is sort of like the beginner ski area for backcountry skiers. See if you can survive there first. If you do something stupid help will not be far away. Avalanche danger there is just as serious as everywhere else tho.

Colorado snowpack is continental and highly wind transported. Meaning difficult, dangerous skiing above tree line on most routes through winter. Only ski in low avy danger in winter (very rare) or wait for spring consolidation. Colorado mountains can and will kill the inexperienced. Take avy class(es) and read the daily Caic reports. Watch the people die every year and learn from those mistakes.

And you must be an expert skier. It’s just not worth it if you can’t ski your way out of tough situations.

So get out there and build your skill set and hit it when you feel good about it. Good luck and have fun.
